How much do you spend?

Hi, Kristi,

My name is Ann and -- I know this is horrible -- I have no idea how much I spend

on food. BUT, my husband who is the money guy in our house tells me that I

actually spend LESS than before I went raw.

I haven't had the typical American diet for years. I was eating 75% organic

anyway, plus the cost of free-range chicken, lots of fish, free-range eggs, and

free-range turkey, all of which are VERY expensive. I bought expensive cheese

at Dean & Deluca, expensive everything really. Not because I was well off, but

because I used to work as a chef and had my self convince that my palate was so

" refined "

:-) that I had to only cook the best at home. So, when I gave up the meats and

the dairy and the baked goods and the chocolates, etc., planted a small garden

and went raw, we actually started saving money. A lot of money.

I also don't seem to need as much food anymore, either. I've heard that from

quite a number of people. Probably because I'm getting all the nutrients I need

out of what I am eating.

Peace and Joy,

Ann

[Raw Food] How much do you spend?

Gearing up to begin and was wondering how much folks here spend on

average for food per month?

On average, Fred and I spend about $500 per month - so, that's for TWO

PEOPLE

The " big bills " come from the organic whole food co-op and the major

supermarket which has a great organic food department.

All of our food is organically grown.

This " bill " also INCLUDES vegetables for JUICING on a daily basis - so

that's a lot more carrots, celery, romaine lettuce, and red cabbage than one

would ordinarily have. This also includes nuts and seeds that can be pretty

pricey. Other items that are not live/raw would be tofu and shoyu soy sauce

and wahani rice which make up for only once daily lightly cooked meal.

Hope that helps.

I live in Europe where raw food is easy to buy but I have found that

as I have discovered new sources along the way the prices have come

down. At an Arab market, for example, I buy a tray of 16-20 avocados

for

one or two dollars, a case of eight to ten mangoes for the same. It is

always

very ripe or I do not buy it.

On the other hand I can go to a local grocer and pay 10 or 15 times the

price.

My guiding light is that there really is nothing in a supermarket that I

need.

There it is wrapped in metal or glass or plastic or polythene or

cellophane with

dicey information printed on it or a or has days more shelf life. It

may have been

ripened in a gas chamber, spliced with some plastic gene etc. How about

a slice of

organic ham?

That said, I'd say I buy more by weight than others do on cooked food.

On the other hand

I share it with nobody. That is not because I am a hermit. It is

simply that I do not

know any other person in the city who eats 100% raw! Nor have I either

made a conversion

or even attempted to make one despite people dropping off like flies by

killing themselves

with forks.

So when thinking raw and spending money, it will probably cost more to

start and less

when you get in the swing.

You might take heart from FREDERIC NIETZSCHE whom a lot of people think

was mad. He said

words to the effect: " Insanity in the individual is rare; however in the

hoards and masses

it is the rule " .

Hi all

I posted an intro about a month ago and have never posted since, But I

have a question for you all.

I wanted to know what the deal with raw grains is. Are they ok to eat? I

see a lot of recipes for raw food requires grains. I was under the

impression that grains being a recent addition to our diet were no good

for us per the book " grain damage " so what is the difference between raw

and processed grains?

Thanks in advance

We are always one;

always love; One love!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I am expecting my bills to go up, but

that's ok. I already eat 95% organic (vegetarian). I am hoping to join a

farm co-op to help offset the expense.

I am currently reading " eating for beauty. " and hope to start as soon

as I finish the book .
