I saw an article in First Magazine about raw diets and I am eager to

turn my life around. I am starting tomorrow. I have spent the evening

looking at various sights on the raw way of life and I am a bit

overwhelmed.

I want to be healthy and, as a side-effect, I want to drop pounds

(about 70). I have done every diet in the book, including Atkins

which made me very, very sick. I am ready to change my life and feel

real energy.

There seems to be a controversy on different websites about just how

much raw to eat. I have seen that you CAN overeat and I have seen

suggestions that say to eat as much as you want. Is there a reliable

source on this? I have ordered two books so far: " 12 Steps to Raw

Food: How to End Your Addiction to Cooked Food " and " Pure and Simple

Natural Weight Control " . These should get me started, but I am

anxious to start tomorrow. Should I just go to the grocery store and

buy a ton of fruits, veggies and nuts?

I should mention that I am not a kitchen person and I do not like to

get involved in lengthy, complicated preparation of food.

Also, is salad dressing okay???

The odds of you over eating is very small on a raw diet. A simple rule of

thumb: always buy organic. Pesticides causes your nervous system to

malfunction, so the information your nervous system is giving you will be

faulty.

Congratulations for making the right first step.

Going 100% raw all in one go will put you into what we call " transition "

and " detoxification " . The latter means a number of minor symptoms may

manifest from headaches to mouth sores to mouth biting etc. They will

all pass and you will start feeling better immediately. However in this

transition period, I felt something akin to hunger or craving. It was

simply that my body was checking around for the old poisons. In

particular you will get a huge carbohydrate reduction as cooked food is

massively packed with them and fats.

You can get used to eating far more. E.g. a pound of spinach or dark

green leaves per day is recommended by a lot of writers on raw food. To

me that looks like four plate loads.

I have not read the books you mention. The current rage in this forum

is " Eat to Live " by Dr. Joel Fuhrman which I have just read. The good

doctor is not completely raw as he recommends eating some cooked

vegetables without giving any explanation as to why the cooking or

steaming as he calls it should improve those vegetables. I suspect he

has that part to please those who think that going 100% is just too

much. On the positive side he explains in detail all the woes of a

" regular " diet. His book has two versions, one for the US market, and

another for the UK market. The UK version at £6.99 is addressed to the

slimming market and has the words " Lose 20 pounds in six weeks -

safely " . That would have me looking like a Belson victim.

In particular, he says you can eat as much as you like of his nutritious

foods, i.e. fruit and vegetables, so do not worry about overeating.

Best of luck on your new way of life. You will get results almost

immediately. Some of those results will be positive, some will be negative.

The negatives, as Peter already mentioned, will be due to detox'g. That's

all the poisons dumping out of your liver and your cells and coursing

through your body on their way OUT. While they're coursing through, they

irritate and cause minor problems.

If you find it difficult to do 100% right off the bat, don't get

discouraged. Many people on this list are probably not 100%. Fred and I

are about 80-85% raw and are gradually transitioning to 100%. We've seen

AMAZING results so far.

I see my hubby (Fred) mentioned organic. Definitely very important.

If you can tolerate juicing, do that as well, but juicing can be very

intense for the unprepared stomach, so make sure you dilute your juice with

half the amount of water. We've found carrot and romaine lettuce a good way

to go; but we also add wheatgrass juice. We grow our own wheatgrass. We

have found that wheatgrass has been CRITICAL in our healing process, so you

might want to ease your way into that when the raw/live lifestyle starts to

settle in.

Spouts are wonderful and so, so, so easy! There are many sprouting devices

out there. Just ask the group and you'll get a bunch of information. Also

there's a for sprouting called sproutpeople. A valuable source

of information!

Overeating? Not very likely.

Salad dressing? I use a bottled dressing which is obviously heated beyond

" raw " . However, lemon juice and cold-pressed olive oil would be better.

I'm sure there are many raw salad dressings one could use and now that you

reminded me, I'm going to look into it myself. Thanks.

As far as weight loss goes, I've already lost 20 lbs. in roughly three to

four months. But I'm not exercising either. I have quite a bit to go, but

I figure it will take me a full year to a year and a half to lose it all.

But I started this above 250 and now I'm 232! By the end of this month I'll

break that 230! I know it's all about numbers. Many people on this list

will tell you to forget about the scale. I can't. The diet isn't about

weight loss and for me it is ALL about health, but I also want to " see "

those numbers go down.

Anyway, best of luck to you. You will be changing your life forever!

First, I want to say that I'm grateful to everyone for their positive,

supportive input. I've been so busy lately, as everything else in life,

things are changing! I'm looking forward to sharing my experiences and

thoughts here.

I've been getting into making salad dressings. One of my favorites is

grinding sesame seeds in a coffee grinder, adding water (I've been using

Biotta Sauerkraut juice, so good!) and whatever herbs I have, dill and basil

are my favorites. Another delicious one is diluting black sesame butter,

delicious, with some liquid.

I always put some flax oil in with the salad. For me, the dressing adds the

yummy flavor to the salad.

I've been getting nut and seed butters from an awesome company, Premiere

Organics. The owner, Jason, is a great person, has the integrity we would

expect all organic companies would have. I've talked with him when placed an

order. Their website is premierorganics.com.

Aloha,

Vicki

Good for you Rose! It's wonderful that you're making the changes with your

hubby, having the support at home and being able to share meals and new

things makes it all the more exciting.
