Guest guest
I am going through some nasty detox headaches and GI cleaning the past two days I have been back home and eating almost 100% raw. Which leads me to my first question: 1. How do you calculate the percentage of raw you are doing? By calories? The only thing I ate cooked in the past 2 days is 1 ear of corn and I boiled it rather than using the microwave. 2. I use a vitamix to make my juice which means I add some purified water to my veggies or fruit and have all the fiber still intact. Does this change anything? 3. Does anyone know if tahini is raw or processed with heat over 106 degrees? 4. What's the story on vinegar? Is it bad for you or what? And are processed spices, i.e. cayenne ok or what? I have ordered several RAW books from the library, but it may take days to get them and I don't want to wait for the information. I am hanging in there with the headache, though I confess I broke down and had 2 aspirins (I also went off coffee 2 days ago). I also went to my chiropractor and he helped me out a great deal. thanks jann Denver, CO
Guest guest
Hello, Jan: The microwave is just a timer in our house. I will not touch the thing to boil water for strangers. As far as corn, have you ever tried it raw? Deliciously sweet and the easiest food to eat without cooking. > 2. I use a vitamix to make my juice which means I add some purified water to > my veggies or fruit and have all the fiber still intact. Does this change > anything? > Frederic Patenaude states in his new recipe book Soup, Salads and Smoothies (there are also great dips in it) to add water to the blending recipes. I would think it would not change anything in a negative way. When our family went raw, unblended salads left us gassy, and the blender allowed us to accept higher quantities of greens - and no GI upset. I love blending. > 3. Does anyone know if tahini is raw or processed with heat over 106 > degrees? Tahini is not raw unless stated on the label. Most tahini is heavily processed according to rawganique.com, " It's scary, " they write. They sell raw tahini. I make my own because theirs is so good I suspect the seeds to be hulled. I have never asked, just that the bitter taste is not present. One can get rid of this bitterness by submerging the seeds in salt water and draining a few times before blending (I have read) but I choose not to. > 4. What's the story on vinegar? Is it bad for you or what? And are processed > spices, i.e. cayenne ok or what? Perhaps someone else can take this one. I eat 10 or more fresh hot peppers a day just like candy when our local organic farmer sells them as they make me happy. I know David Wolfe does also. Perhaps this is my justification to continue. I also add apple cider vinegar to blended soups sometimes, though not nowadays. Hang in there with that headache. Miko

Guest guest
Hi Jann, far be it from me to offer advice, I still feel like I'm stumbling round in the dark here and not getting on very well, but may I just say that at the beginning I was having headaches too, but found that as soon as I stopped the coffee they stopped the very next day. I can't just eat raw food, I've tried, but mustn't just be ready for it yet, will have to take it a bit easier. As it goes at the moment, I'm shredding lots of raw veg for tea, but pouring some warm cooked sauce over it. It's the best I can mannage. Love Shell. Does this change > anything? Hi Jann, In Dr. Livingston-Wheelers' book, " Conquest of Cancer " , she gives an outline for " General Dietary Instuctions for Cancer Patients " , there are 25 guidelines but the first and I'll agree the most important stating: " During the day freshly-pressed juices and raw soups should be taken when thirsty instead of water. This helps to saturate the system with organically-combined minerals, vitamins, and live-oxidizing enzymes, aiding detoxification of the body. The exception to this suggestion is when nothing can be kept in the stomach and only water is retained. " This maybe for cancer patients, but it is good advice. I find that when you drink water with live foods it slows down digestion because it dilutes the digestive enzymes found in those foods. I try to drink a cup of water every hour (I need to as I'm pregnant and breastfeeding) but I don't ingest anything else for 20 mins. afterwards. This is just my point of view. Have you tried fasting yet? This will detox you very quickly and maybe the headaches would go away faster, however it is better to fast only if you've been on a raw food diet for more than six months. Guest guest
Jann, I am battling headaches too... and I have broken down and eaten cooked food. I have managed to stay away from the caffeine though. You calculate the percentage by calories consumed. Regarding the vitamix - that isn't really juice. Juice has the fiber removed. The vitamix is just chewing up your food for you. I do sometimes put oranges or grapefruit in mine and drink my fruit instead of eating them too. I have never added water though. I personally think you are better off not adding the water. It would dilute your fruit. White vinegar shouldn't be used for anything other than cleaning. Raw cider vinegar is what you want. You should be able to find some at your local health food store. Spices are tricky. Chances are they have been irradiated. I'd get those from a health food store and make sure they are labeled non-irradiated. I don't know how they dry them though. Frontier is a well known brand. Maybe you could contact them and ask. ~Wendy
