Guest guest
I've read the recent posts about raw eggs and meat, and I'm a little confused. I know that one of the fundamental differences between vegans and raw fooders is activism vs. health (in general, but not across the board). What I'm wondering is if those of you who eat animal products (raw, organic, whatever) are aware of the conditions the animals are kept in? Finding out just how deplorable they are will keep me away from animal products, organic or not, for good. Is this an issue for people, or is it all about health? Just curious, not condemming... Not all animals are kept in deplorable conditions. I know people who eat goat yogurt from pet goats. I eat eggs from chickens treated kindly by a small farmer. Soon I'm going to start raising my own chickens. You don't have to choose to eat factory farmed animal products. There are other options. When people start demanding ethically raised animal products, the supply will increase even more than it already has. Guest guest
Hi Bridgitte, Being vegan for me is totally and utterly about animal welfare. My interest in raw is totally about health. However, in the same way that I realize that some people are made ill by eating nuts or some are ill by eating wheat, I appreciate that some people are made ill by eating vegan and I do still have great respect for those that have tried it and it hasn't worked. I know some people who keep pet chickens and if that happened to me I would accept their offer of eggs, or I would keep my own chickens. However, although I say I'm vegan, I have no right to be smug as I have no way of knowing what fertilizers were used on the veg I eat and even our water supply is treated by the use of animal bones. So, what can you do? I can't grow my own veg and organic probably means more use of animal fertilizers than the chemical rubbish. Sometimes I feel you can't really say that you are totally vegan unless you can go away and hermit in a mountain cave somewhere and eat by gathering berries in the local woods! We all just do as much as we are able. Love Shell.
