Hi All,

I have been attempting to transition to a raw diet, and I've just

found out that I'm pregnant. How does one go about going raw while

pregnant? I've looked all over for information on raw pregnancy,

and I've come up completely blank! I am confident that we have some

people here with the experience and/or knowledge to either answer my

questions, or point me in the right direction.

Many thanks in advance!

In such I would watch B12 like a hawk. A lack could cause serious damage.

Thanks for the advice, Peter. What are some good raw sources of

B12? I have my first prenatal appt today, so hopefully I'll get

some info, but I already know that my doctor is going to recommend

meat, dairy and cooked food. I am concerned that they will not

support a raw diet, and thus may not have enought information

available to me.

Thanks!

D,

Congrats on your pregnancy :-)

When you're pregnant your body detoxes naturally, hence morning sickness.

The key is to avoid it getting too bad! The placenta does a pretty good job

as a barrier but you should try to avoid having too much toxic waste flowing

around your veins, so eating starchy foods can slow down detox - either raw

foods like sweetcorn, peas, non-sweet fruits, or cooked stuff like rice,

potatoes or yams (avoid cooked grains if poss).

Minerals - as a transitioner, chances are you'll have trouble eating greens

soon, so make sure you're getting enough elsewhere. Eat a few soaked nuts or

seeds, and maybe consider a green superfood supplement.

Folic acid - abundant in greens, but I would recommend a supplement as

you're still in early transition.

B12 - you may or may not be fine, but it's not worth taking chances where

babies are concerned. Take a sublingual supplement. I use BioCare vitasorb

B12 drops.

Vitamin D - if you didn't get a lot of sunlight this summer, take a

supplement. It's essential for both you and the baby in using calcium. Most

people get it from dairy products.

Teeth - when pregnant you are more prone to gum recession and attack by

bacteria, so rinse with water after eating fruit and make sure your oral

hygiene is good. Avoid biting acidic or dried fruits.

You're right, there's not much info out there about raw pregnancy... mostly,

I believe, because parents are afraid to admit to the authorities that

they're doing what is seen as a " fad diet " which is grounds for surveillance

or intervention when the baby's born. I'd love to help spread the word but

am scared silly of the possible consequences (i.e. child fattened up in

foster care).

I started my transition when I was pregnant and gave

birth to a healthy baby boy. The midwife said she

never saw such a pink and healthy baby.

I drank alot of coconut milk and my favorite salad mix

I ate was. Spinach, avocado, parsley, and

strawberries with a dash of Nama Shoyu and olive oil.

I also made sure to eat foods high in anti-oxidants.

I agree about keeping an eye on B-12, look into what

has live-foods have a high b-12 content.

Congrats on bringing in a new life!!! :)

Watch out for the difference between analog B-12 and the actual B-12 that

the body needs.

Here is very detailed, excellent information by a vegan dietitian, Jack

Norris.

http://www.veganoutreach.org/health/B122002.pdf

At least consider printing it out, and reading most of it, even though you

might not _want_ to know the information that it contains...

Anyyhow, key point is that the body does not use the form of B-12

found in spirulina.

I suspect that the reason people feel good when they eat it because of

its mineral content.

Sincerely,

Margie

My friends, Mark Peebler and his wife Krysta who had been quasi-raw, decided

to be absolutely 100% raw during the course of their pregnancy. We all

waited to see how the baby would do.

Their daughter was born the most healthy baby any of us had ever seen. She

was big and robust and fantastic and seems to be developing physically

faster and more healthily than other children her age.
