Guest guest
Hello, I'm new to the list and to the idea of eating only raw foods. So far my foray in the the raw food world has consisted of just adding a large salad and maybe one or two pieces of fruit to my daily diet. I know that sounds terribly paltry, but for me, it's a big change. My body is not reacting very well to even that little change, but I'm sure I'll get used to it. Generally I never eat vegetables or fruit, prefering just a vitamin pill instead (I can just see some of you cringing at that statement). My goal is to change my diet to entirely raw food within a couple of months. Right now I'm nearing 50, about 80 lbs. overweight, always terribly exhausted, and I've noticed my memory is getting worse and worse. My doctor, at my insistence, has run quite a few tests on my and there is nothing significantly wrong with me. I live in southwest Oklahoma, and there is only one place in our little town that sells organic vegetables. I'd like to try some gardening in the spring. Also I wondered if anyone knows of a source online where I can order reasonably-priced bean sprouts? There are a few health food stores around here but the sprouts are just outrageously priced. Anyway, nice to meet you all and it certainly is wonderful to be on a list like this. Lena
Guest guest
You can sprout your own at a cost of next to noting and have fun doing it. I just use an old Mason jar. If your local health food store doesn't have the seeds you can order the on-line. This is my favorite link. http://www.sproutpeople.com/index.html You can even sprout other things like brown rice and some nuts like sunflower seeds. Happy sprouting to ya! ----Original Message----- Angelina H. Guest guest
Lena, Just make your own sprouts. It's very easy and much cheaper than buying them. Basically you take the nut, seed or grain and soak it in water. The length of time varies but it is usually overnight. Then you drain the water off and put it in your sprouting container. You can pay hundreds of dollars for a fancy one or you can just use a glass jar with some fabric or netting rubberbanded over the mouth. The most important thing is to get all the water drained off really well otherwise what you are sprouting may mold. Then you rinse the item off 2-3 times a day. Be sure to drain off all the excess water off. With less than 5 minutes of work a day most items will be ready to eat in 3-5 days. This site has good info on sprouting and a chart telling how long to sprout various items. http://www.btinternet.com/~bury_rd/sprout.htm Most items you sprout can be found in any health food store. There are also lots of places to buy the seeds online. Here's a couple: http://sproutman.com/ http://sproutpeople.com/ Sandey " Angelina H. Guest guest
Hello Lena, welcome. I hope you get used to eating raw too. I'm not cringing at anything but what's the point to eating a vitamin pill. That hardly sounds healthy for a lifetime. I think it's important for me to just get used to my plant food. It seems as if that's the way God would have me eat. Good luck on " the couple of months " thing. I hope to be stably raw in a couple months, I've been 100% raw since early January. If I can just get over the desire to want to get into a relationship that wouldn't make me feel right, I'd be home free. Cause if I don't feel right about one thing, like a relationship, I'm very likely to not stay raw. Do you go to any support groups? Your town sounds large enough to have some Alcoholics Anonymous and Overeaters Anonymous in it, if those groups would appeal to you at all. That's nice that you have at least one place in your town that sells organic food. Sounds like quite the cool, little town. Rich

Guest guest
Thank you, Szabina. I guess what I meant was where to get the seeds, rather than the actual sprouts, so thanks for posting links to some seed sources. I guess I need to catch on to the raw food lingo a little better. :::blushing::: Lena << Szabina Snape <szabinasnape Most items you sprout can be found in any health food store. Guest guest
Ahah! Sorry I didn't read ahead! let me know what sprout source you ended up using. I've gotten some from sproutpeople in the past, which has worked out fine. On Mon, 23 Feb 2004, Angelina H. wrote: > Thank you, Szabina.
