Guest guest
Greetings everyone, Does anyone know if sluggishness is a symptom of detoxing. My mother and I have been drinking BarleyMax along with carrot juice around 4 or 5 times a day. She has noticed increased sluggishness and increased desire to sleep since then. I am wondering if this is due to the detoxing or if she is missing some nutrients from the foods since she is older. She is 66 years old. She is vegetarian and eats mostly raw. I constantly hear the argument from meat eaters that meat is needed because of essential amino acids and other nutrients that veggies cannot provide. Any truth to this or suggestions? Thanks, Janice
Guest guest
Hi, While I'm no expert, I do know that Barley products are similar to gluten in their effects on the body. Gluten tends to stick to the intestines and other places in the body and its difficult to release it. Perhaps you could substitute the Barley product for something that is gluten free. Again, I'm not an expert, but from what I've read barley, oats, wheat, even rice contain gluten which is difficult for the body to process. Blessings for good health One Love Pam
Guest guest
Unfortunately detox is different for everyone so no blanket answer will cover your question. I think it is generally safe to say that some people will experience tiredness, grogginess, need more sleep (while others become more energetic and need less sleep). When your body sleeps it regenerates and repairs things that need to be repaired. It is possible that one's body is needing extra sleep or to slow down because it is trying to repair cells while cleansing itself. I think it is recommended on fasts to do as little as possible to allow your body to repair as fully as it can. Your mother's body may be aware of the need to slow down for repair. From my research and understanding, there are no essential nutrients received from meat that you can't obtain from fruits and vegetables. Even B12 received from meat may not be as usable a source as so many argue. Fruit has the highest concentration of vitamins of any other food second is vegetables. Vegetables have the highest concentration of minerals, second is fruit. Fruit and vegetables are the #1 and #2 for vitamins and minerals in our diet. The meat and dairy industry has done an incredible job marketing to our culture ~ no wonder all you hear is their necessity in our diet! The food guide pyramid that is taught to our kids (and us)in schools was generated by the American Agriculture Department, not any department with focus on nutrition or health. It is scary to hear the general point of view from EVERYONE! It does make one doubt ~ I tend to think our body chemistry is all different and what works for one person may not work for another. I think listening to the body is very important no matter what lifestyle diet one chooses. If you or your mother are frightened about the nutrient content she is getting, you can always have blood work done for the nutrients in the body. I don't know what BarleyMax is. I think great cleansers are the natural ones; watermelon, lemon, grapes, apples etc. If BarleyMax is a commercial detox drink I, personally wouldn't use it. Rozalind Gruben and George Graham said that the #1 & #2 problems they see coming into their treatment from raw foodist are detox cleanser use and too much fat in the diet. Both can cause havoc on the body. Obviously I'm not a professional and can't give professional advice or recommendations. Just thought I'd throw in my 2 cents incase it helps! Best wishes to both you and your mother. Guest guest
No truth to their comments. All fruits and veggies have protein in them and by eating a good variety, as well as sprouts and such you can get all 8 essential amino acids in a wonderfully healthy way. Yes, it could be your body saying it wants to clean house so sleep more. It might also be that you are taking too much of it and it's more than your body wants?? You might want to cut back and see how you respond? Guest guest
Greetings Janice. A large amount of sweet juices can also cause a yo yo effect as it increases the blood sugar rapidly and the blood sugar may drop rapidly shortly after. The carrot juice is very high in sugar (maybe half and half w/ware or green juices). Some say the extra beta carotene ights cancer and is an immune booster. On the other hand the excess sugar feeds yeast and parasites. Also as the blood sugar goes up the immune goes down. Not to say that it can't be detox symptoms. peace, Mark
Guest guest
Hello Raw Soul: I think the sluggishness could be caused by any number of things, with detoxing being one possibility. I know that BarleyMax has vitamins, some enzymes, etc., but I wonder if your mom should try a fresh juice such as wheatgrass, spinach, or kale, or possibly other juices. It may also be that the carrot juice is too sweet for your mother's system and converting very quickly to carbohydrates - she could experience a temporary lift in energy, followed by the crash to sluggishness. Maybe using apples, or using a green vegetable and adding a red pepper or yellow pepper (for sweetness), should be used instead. I don't know if you are juicing the carrot juice yourself or not, but the other day, I started to buy a bottled carrot juice from the health food store because it was quick and I was hungry. When I looked at it, it said it was "flash pasteurized," which means we don't know what temperature the heat gets to for the juice. The vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc., are probably being "flashed" out.... The only thing missing from a nonmeat diet as I understand it are B12 which can be supplemented with nutritional yeast, etc., and I have heard from meat eaters also the Omega 3,6,9, which can be supplemented with Flax Seed oil. The Flax Seed oil is excellent for wise women of all ages, and provides antioxidants, and helps women make the transition to menopause and following menopause. Adding something such as B12 is not much to do for a vegetarian diet when you compare it to everything people experience from eating meat....Blessings...Ashtarra
