Baltimore Potluck, and thoughts about the dead and the living

Hi,

Is there anyone on this list in the Baltimore area?

I'm starting up my raw potlucks again. Next Wednesday (the 9th). You're

invited. I start doing food prep around 5:30, come join in that, or come

later than that if you're bringing a prepared dish, maybe 6:30 or 6:45.

Forgive me, I'm going to meander a bit here:

I used to have a weekly raw potluck, which became a bi-weekly potluck

during local electoral races in 2003, which then took at least a 3-4 month

hiatus in 2004-2005 due to national electoral work, and post-election,

post-funeral depression. (Two of my friends died after the election, one

aged 53 (Dawn) an extremely talented musician, contra dance caller, and

writer, and the other (Leah) a 25-year-old high energy, awesome amazing

smart savvy funny woman who loved organic food.

Leah's the vibrant dark-haired one the left of the photo at the bottom of:

More about her at

(hmmm.. the pictures... is it okay to be white on this listserv? ;)

Dawn died on Thanksgiving. She was a creative soul whom I had only

recently gotten to know (but had known for years in the art and music

community). She expressed interest in my raw potlucks, but alas, I didn't

have any in the several months before she died of a heart attack.

On the living side of things, I just installed an automatic sprouter in my

basement.

http://eatsprouts.com/pic-greens.html

I have mixed feelings about it. I love it, but also feel not-so-good that

its automated water supply flows through vinyl tubing. My first harvest

(today!) tasted a little bitter (I probably need to install a water

filter) and the sunflower seeds took a long time to manually dehull!

They've sprouted for 9 days, but those seeds were very attached to their

greens! I've gotten seeds from sproutpeople.com which are a different

shape and color (darker, thinner, smaller) and maybe will dehull

themselves a little more easily...

I'm not 100% raw. I do love and enjoy raw cuisine. I'm actually teaching

cooking classes (yeah, cooking) now, for the Cancer Project

(cancerproject.org; It's a vegan curriculum, and in an email tonight, I

just got permission to substitute some raw recipes in one of the six

classes! This is good. There are other raw recipes already in the

curriculum, of course, salads, a salsa, and a lower-fat guacamole (that

adds peas to lower the fat content). I'd like to do some gorgeous colorful

raw stuff, though, for the antioxidant lesson. Suggestions welcome. I do

plan a fruit tart, maybe I can experiment...

Those are my thoughts for the evening. I'm not a religious person (I'm

sure many on this list are). But I do share a passion for colorful raw

organic fresh greens, and red, orange, yellow and purple produce!

Once a local TV station came to my house and did a story on my raw

potluck. They actually did a good job on it. (I don't own a TV, I had to

visit a friend to watch it.) That time 17 people showed up, because they

all knew the TV crew was coming. Usually I just have a few people, in part

because I rarely take the time to actually " promote " the event. Anyhow,

I'm definitely on for next Wednesday, and probably for most Wednesdays

after that (but check in to make sure.)

My dinners in the past have included young and old (does in your 80s count

as " old? " ), white, black, deaf, hearing, religious, non-religious, 100%

raw and first-time raw folks. When you come, it could be any mix. A

potluck in more ways than one.

Feel free to come by... My address (and some of my web pages) are below.

Look forward to meeting you.

Please RSVP so I know how many places to set. I'm very informal, by the

way. Should I add that I've never learned how to be neat? I do try to

clean up for company! Place settings for all!

(I kind of have a picture of meticulous raw food folks who'll be horrified

by stacks of mail, piles of books, but if that sort of thing doesn't

terribly offend, or even invites, by all means come on by. Neat people are

welcome, of course, but my house won't look like yours, so caveat emptor,

as they say.

(Are most raw foodists particularly neat / Feng Shui followers?)

Okay, I'll stop writing now! I'm not usually this verbose. Just something

about the sprouts, and the times.

Sincerely,

Margie

Hello Margie,

is it okay to be white on this listserv?Fear not, you aren't the only white face on this site :-)

(I kind of have a picture of meticulous raw food folks who'll be horrifiedby stacks of mail Secondly, I have found you cannot in anyway stereotype rawfoodists! Boy do we come from diverse backgrounds, and frankly, that's one of the things I love about it. We all stretch our comfort zones a little.

Is there anyone on this list in the Baltimore area? I live in the Columbia area and as much as I love potlucks, I have found I just can't make them a priority right now. In the summer, I would enjoy going to them. Another issue is that it would only be me coming, which means I am leaving my family to eat at home and since that is a special time (dinner in particular), I do prefer when pot lucks are on weekend afternoons or evenings and we can flex our family time.

Two of my friends died after the election, My condolences in the loss of your special friends. It is hard to say good bye to the one's we hold so dear. I'm not a religious person (I'msure many on this list are)As a spiritual person, however, I believe that our souls live on and we can see our friends again in another dimension. We are all made of energy and energy never stops it just changes form :-)

Friends,

I love the idea of " stretching " comfort zones.

That's a good word.

I think the only person I know (or at least that I know that I know) on

this listserv is Lynda.

Hope to meet some others, especially folks near Baltimore. (who might not

have to stretch their _travel_ zones too far)

Call or write if you'd like to come to a raw potluck. All are welcome.

By the way, Skai Davis, who's not on this listserv, but who owns the Yabba

Pot in Baltimore has recently gotten interested in raw. She's sprouting,

juicing, and her menu features Live Kale Salad and some other good raw

(as well as cooked vegan) stuff.

My " cooking class " is actually at the Yabba pot. Tomorrow's class features

2 raw, and 2 cooked, (but I'm going to tell him how replace the cooked

stuff)

Have any of you ever tried Matt Amsden's taco filling? Process walnuts

with cumin, coriander, and Nama Shoyu sauce. Not too finely. That, plus a

guacamole, a salsa all wrapped up in a chinese cabbage leaf, or a collard

leaf. Yum! Today I substitute my second harvest of sunflower greens for

the processed walnuts. Just really good stuff.

Sincerely,

Margie

Joyce, I think Skai from Yabba Pot is coming by tomorrow: she's starting

to get into raw, and maybe Alok, a raw foodist who actually _is_ leaving

Baltimore for good this weekend. Elizabeth, my regular, of course, and

Gitana.

My father's coming over tonight... suprise visit.

Darn, missed you last night. Skai also wasn't able to come (her mom is

quite ill). I'll send a few pics when I get home.

Gitana brought pecans off the tree that were divine.

I'm still kind of reeling from the state of the world, but raw remains

rawsome,

I'll probably do another raw potluck in 2 weeks, but check back for

confirmation.
