Guest guest
Greetings Members: Earlier this year and in the past few weeks I offered a challenge to the group that would help us to move faster and healthier toward achieving optimal health by taking on the Annual Chesapeake Bay Brige Walk that would have taken place on May 1, 2005. Today, while following up on the event and preparing to thank the members of who volunteered to help organize a group event and maybe a Bay Bridge Pot Luck afterwards, I learned of the following information. Go here for more information. . . . http://www.roadstothefuture.com/Chesa_Bay_Bridge_Walk.html The May 1, 2005 Annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk has been cancelled. As most of us have struggled and some still, to go on after 9/11 it seems that we are somehow forced to re-live the events on a daily basis. Now that spring time is really here, maybe some of you can be a little more creative than myself and come up with some sort of out-or-doors event for the group. My thanks to all. Guest guest
I think there are some people in the group that are involved in non profit organazations. Let's do our own walk and get sponsers and donate them to some of these organizations. We can use one of the many bike trails in the area and minimize the amount of prep work and put our resources together and get some media coverage. June is a great month w/plenty of time to prepare. peace, Mark E. Rice-Fells <shortydemp Group Sun, 10 Apr 2005 20:35:29 -0700 (PDT) DISAPPOINTMENT! Guest guest
Virginia Beach has a wonderful park ~ Seashore State Park. It has lots of nature trails, bike trails, walking trails. I think it is 3 miles through the park on a straight path, but you can wind your way around and make it longer, if you want. It also comes out to a beachy area, as well. Is this the kind of thing you are talking about? Where exactly would donated funds be going? BEV On Behalf Of blakenson Saturday, April 16, 2005 7:09 AM Re: DISAPPOINTMENT! Guest guest
Dear Mark et al, I fully agree that we should have a group outing, whether it involves hiking, biking, a walkathon or another adventure activity, ie. rockclimbing, abseiling, whitewater rafting, canyoning, etc. As far as a bike-a-thon or walkathon is concerned, some of the many worthwhile non-profit organizations for which such an event should raise money include: Compassion Over Killing Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine Friends of Animals Habitat for Humanity Some of these are more or less in the immediate vicinity of DC, although more geographically diverse organizations, such as PCRM and HFH above, are equally justified in deserving our support. I've always preferred physical over financial support, since I'm far from rich, but all fronts must be addressed & all means of support are equally appreciated. I personally love biking in sunny, warm weather, so if anyone else on this list, whether in the DC area, MD suburbs or preferably (for practical reasons) in the Baltimore vicinity (since I live in the county), is interested in biking while the weather is tolerable, please contact me. If we can organize a somewhat larger event of this sort, especialy if we can get widespread positive publicity for the raw vegan " lifestyle " (as much as this word gets on my nerves a la George Carlin), all the better. Guest guest
I understand the need to do it in the DC area ~ however, if anyone is interested in a weekend retreat type of thing in Virginia Beach I can offer the following help. I can give you a list of hotels or a # to rent a house ~ there is also a camp ground w/ little cabins or room for tents/campers that may be fun for a group thing. I can call the BEACON ~ local paper which may be interested in doing a story about the event. I can put up notices at the Heritage, where the event may take more participants. Ideas for activities: We could do a hike/walk/jog or bike through Seashore State Park. Participant could pick their activity. (I'm thinking a general start location and people can branch off whether they want to hike/bike/walk/jog, etc. then an ending location, where we all meet after.) The park has plenty of parking and a good spot for meeting.) We could include the walk/run or bike on the oceanfront & wear a " uniform " shirt w/ a message if we were interested in being more " visible " ~ I guess it depends what the focus is ~ fun for us or spreading the word! I can look into having the shirts made. If our numbers are small ~ anywhere from 10-60 people or so, I can't imagine we'd need the city's permission, however, depending on the interest level, I can check w/ the city on what we need to do to organize it. We could have a pot luck type raw-out after the event, maybe at the campground or something. If there is interest, I am happy to take the necessary steps. Let me know ~ BEV On Behalf Of dapperd72 Saturday, April 16, 2005 10:49 AM Re: DISAPPOINTMENT! Guest guest
Greetings and thank you Mark, Bev, David and Lynda for your replies to my request for an alternate outdoor activity in lieu of the annual Chesapeak Bay Bridge Walk that was cancelled this year. As with most people, I love to soak up as much outdoor sun and fun as possible during the spring, summer and fall. I think the idea of physical activities for the group is a great idea, though I have no idea of how to organize one on a large scale. If there's anyone in addition to Mark, Bev, David or Lynda who has experience in organizing a sizable event will you mind letting us know so that we may begin work on one? Thanks for your help.
