Guest guest
I also love the taste of fresh ripe papayas, but the main problem in the U.S. is identical to that of mangoes, especially in Whole Foods. Both of these luscious fruits, unless they are certified organically grown and coming from only either Hawaii or Florida, are allowed by the USDA to be irradiated and genetically engineered, in addition to being required to be dropped in boiling water for at least 30 seconds to 5 minutes (probably the latter). In this day and age, there is no reason to doubt that all non-organically grown papayas and mangoes are genetically engineered and irradiated as per USDA complicity (with no genuine interest in protecting human health any more than the lives of nonhumans in the agribusiness industry). Mangoes and papayas, even if organically grown, are also REQUIRED by the USDA to be dropped in boiling water as I stated, UNLESS they come from Hawaii or Florida. Contrary to what some naive or deceptive Whole Foods employees have told me, their stores definitely sell a vast array of genetically engineered and irradiated produce, besides the fact they increase their " conventional " produce volume all the time while shrinking their organic volume beyond recognition. For these aforementioned reasons, among others, Dr. Tim Trader and I, along with other raw foodists, routinely avoid buying either of these delicious fruits as much as possible unless they're at least from Hawaii or Florida. When I fasted at Tanglewood last October, Tim also told me that he's caught Whole Foods selling genetically engineered tomatoes in the past while their employees shamelessly claim the opposite and he had to explain this blatant contradiction to them. We've both also caught their produce employees sometimes mixing " conventional " and organic produce in the same bins in the past, which violates federal USDA organic regulations prima facie. For example, a few months ago, I found organic and " conventional " zucchini sold in the same bin, but I didn't realize this till observing some with organic stickers and others with no sticker. One of the less forthright employees who I've seen working there (Mt. Washington, Baltimore, MD) for a long time admitted to me that those without stickers are " conventional. " Despite my overriding distrust of Whole Foods as an institution, I have little choice but to shop there every other weekend for basic staples and adhere to the principle of " caveat emptor " as a rule of thumb. Otherwise, I'd have to drive up to 50 miles round trip every weekend to Roots in Clarksville, which has much higher quality and variety of organic produce than Whole Foods, hands down. I did, however, eat the unsulfured dried spears until they recently gave me indigestion. I decided to do an experiment to see if my tastebuds have changed since I'm even more into raw foods. Two weeks ago, I purchased a papaya from Whole Foods and it was so good that I went back and got two more and ate those big ol' things in two days. Guest guest
I get Papayas from Lancaster Foods from Jamaica with the company "Martha's Best" and they clearly say on the package that there is NO irradiation, etc. I have been eating them for years and they taste superior so I believe they are what they say they are. Guest guest
Nancy et al, I wholeheartedly agree that Martha's Best papayas are (probably) of far higher quality than any available at Whole Foods. I sometimes bought them from Han Ah Reum (Korean market in Catonsville, MD) in the distant past, but I've had severe customer service issues with Han Ah Reum, ironically related most recently to Martha's Best papayas in the 6-unit boxes, which were always the best value in theory. They didn't ripen properly after 8 days, and instead developed white fungus and spoiled. Since I couldn't drive back to Han Ah Reum within 1 week to return them, and I had to wait longer than this for anything resembling ripeness, I had to publicly fight with their employees to get anything resembling a refund, but only in the form of an exchange. They initially pressured me relentlessly to buy another box of papayas, but I already resolved to avoid that problem by not buying papayas from them anymore and only wanted to buy my usual durians and young coconuts instead. The produce manager watched me pick my items, then told the cashier what I was buying, but rounded the price of my items up to the nearest dollar, above the actual price. I was a very loyal customer of theirs for over 2 years, but I cannot maintain my self-respect if I continue to tolerate such overt humiliation with several other customers staring at me just because I stood up for my rights as a consumer. As a result, I have not shopped there for the past 3 months and have no plan to return. Instead I now give Lotte Plaza (Ellicott City) my business for these simple items. Having worked in the customer service field for over 10 years, I know and appreciate quality customer service. Any business that treats me with respect (as per the Golden Rule) will continue to get my patronage. Otherwise, let them go bankrupt and I'll take my business elsewhere. Suffice to say, generally, Martha's Best papayas are far superior to any other " conventional " papayas I've encountered. <pnparlette wrote: >I get Papayas from Lancaster Foods from Jamaica with the company > " Martha's Best " and they clearly say on the package that there is NO >irradiation, etc. I have been eating them for years and they taste >superior so I believe they are what they say they are. >Nancy > > > >Nancy Parlette >HEALTHY LIVING STRATEGIES >Natural Health Counselor >Nutrition Educator >(410) 531-2410 >healthylivingstrategies >http://www.healthylivingstrategies.net/ > -- " Patriotism means to stand by the country. Guest guest
David, Namaste and bless you for shedding light on food I just recently purchased (papayas) and the business practices of whole foods. The worst thing about whole foods is that most people believe that whole food’s conventional genetically engineered produce is okay or even superior to produce found at Giant or Safeway. I have to say that I am guilty of that as well. And the USDA boiling of the fruits from foreign countries? I was unaware of this practice and was deeply disturbed by it. I’m boycotting whole foods. If I find myself left with whole foods as my only option then that will be an opportunity to take on a fast. The usda and other gov’t agencies that are controlling our food and now even the organic, they are devils, period. The organic fruit that we are getting now is already second rate and now they are looking to turn it into poison. Speaking of poison, anyone drinking the shaved plastic wrapped Thai coconuts, those coconuts are poison. Loren Lockman told me after they shave the protective skin they are dipped in a poisonous pesticide solution and the water is always rancid. I listened to David Wolfe’s interview on coast to coast am and the one thing that stuck with me is growing our own food. It’s gotten beyond that point. Thanks again all for sharing. Love and light, khepere
