Guest guest
Does everyone know about CSA's (community supported agriculture)? There are quite a few of them in MD, and mosy of thrm are meticulously organic. We belong to a great one in Adamstown called House in the Woods Farm. They also grow lots of heirloom varieties of veggies. I have heard tale of a biodynamic CSA in Bethesda. It's a great way of getting local produce while supporting local farmers in a very direct manner. Not to mention meeting very cool people! Just a suggestion. Guest guest
I thoroughly believe in CSA by definition. However, this list appears to be primarily geared toward people in the vicinity of DC, whether DC, MD or VA. Since I live northwest of Baltimore, MD, CSA's and other such worthwhile organizations or establishments (ie. My Organic Market) in the DC region are very impractical for me to patronize more than once in a red moon when I happen to be in the immediate vicinity by coincidence. Are there any notable CSA's in the vicinity of Baltimore, MD? If so, I'd look forward to visiting and supporting them with bells on. Thanks. Guest guest
David, the food in MOM's is so fresh that I shop there maybe twice or three times a month and the produce holds up fine. I miss seeing you David, Love Lynda
Guest guest
Could you pass the phone numbers of these CSAs? I would like to take advantage of that. Perhaps some of us who live closer to distribution centers and CSAs could possibly ship goods to those who can not reach them. Just a suggestion and I would be willing to help out. Guest guest
the number for House in the Woods is 301-607-4048. the farmers' names are Ilene and Phil Freedman. I don't think there are any shares left for this year, but hey, it doesn't hurt to ask! i don't know much aboutthe one in Bethesda. Actually, Ilene is the one that told me about it, so if you give them a call, I'm sure she could tell you more. Tell them Elise sent you!!! Guest guest
Lynda, Of course, MOM has some of the best organic produce I've found anywhere, leagues above anything I'd ever find at Whole Foods, but the nearest branch is 40-45 miles away, so it's not practical unless a raw food potluck or other worthwhile event happens to occur when I can attend in the vicinity. Therefore, I shop at Roots on alternate weekends, whose produce is comparable to MOM in price, value and variety, but considerably closer, hence more accessible. I miss you too. I wish more avid social events were available more often (especially in my region) for all of us raw foodists (or wanna-be's) beyond potlucks, lectures and food demos. Guest guest
Thanks, Elise, but Owings is actually an entirely different town from Owings Mills, much further from Baltimore or Owings Mills than you'd imagine. Columbia is somewhat near Clarksville, albeit somewhat out of the way from Roots. If any CSA in that area was sponsoring a raw vegan event or something otherwise animal-rights or other progressively politically related event, I'd probably go check it out. Guest guest
Can you cut and paste that link it's not coming up for me. I keep getting a hcfoods.org, which doesn't come up either. Guest guest
I just realized that I can make it to MOMS on my lunch hour with plenty of time for poking around plus they sell Fiore Wines, which are my FAVORITE!!! although I found out that one of my favorite things, their hummus sandwich isnt delivered until 1pm and sometimes they run completely out of the sandwiches from the day before. But their raw nuts and produce are the best I have found. Unfortunately with this knowledge Trader Joes has just lost a frequent customer. Guest guest
I lived in Owings for a year in 1997. We lived in my ex-husbands grandfathers basement across the street from the funeral home. It is very pretty there, but I had a hard time adjusting from the "big city". We were only there for a year while we recovered from financial difficulties. Owings is the kind of town that if you blink you literally miss it.
