I heard the coverage. Not sure if what I heard was Democracy Now or not (I

listen to Democracy Now, but not exclusively...)

I went to a conference last year on Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities

held at UMBC. Apart from the toxic food there, they also were distributing

this book, from our goverment.

I found that cookbook to be apalling. They hadn't even taken out

heart-toxic trans fats from their recipes.

Being white myself, it would kind of be a little awkard to mount a

campaign about how our government promotes unhealthy food in the name of

health to our ethnic populations (they also have a Hispanic Heart Healthy

set of recipes, equally ill-informed.)

http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/other/sp_recip.htm

Here's the PDF of the African-American one, complete with African-centric

artwork

http://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/public/heart/other/chdblack/cooking.pdf

(as though traditional Africans ate cornbread with white sugar and 1/4 tub

of margarine, and as though a recipe book that doesn't have a single

vegetarian (no-less vegan) entree is " heart-healthy. " )

I did approach PCRM, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

about it. They do have a lot on their plate. But if anyone here is as

appalled by those recipes as I am, that issue is worth pursuing.

Anyhow, Lynda, I'm interested in your take on the Democracy Now coverage.

If you tell me what they were saying, I'll remember if I heard it.

Best Regards,

Margie P.S. the data at the conference was very compelling, showing clear

disparities in various chronic diseases in African-American vs. other

populations. I can't help but think most of it is lifestyle-related.

Especially when I spoke to the conference organizers about offering

support for healthier food next year, and the answer, from our Office on

Minority Health was " I would never force people to eat that way. " I mean,

I practically told 'em I'd pay for a plant-centered catered event at next

year's conference, and that was the response. So, for me there was another

kind of disparity in addition to the ethnic one: The disparity of the

power of nutrition in health (huge), and the application by policy makers

of that information (tiny).

Hmmm...I'll look for the transcript on the Democracy Now show...and I'll

be interested in what others have to say.
