October!Namaste,Ananda Kiamsha Madelyn Leeke A. Autumn’s Sacredness September 23rd marked the first day of Autumn, Rosh Hashanah (Jewish New Year), and Navaratri (Hindu Festival of the nine divine nights). The next day, the Muslim holy season of Ramadan began. Each of these events reminded me how important it is for human beings to honor what is sacred in nature and our unique cultures and spiritual practices.

When we take time to honor what is sacred in our world, we deepen the connection we share with the divine energy within us. This divine energy is the source of our greatness. It allows us to share our healing light and love, and use our gifts and talents to serve others. October is a month filled with endless opportunities to deepen the connection we share with the divine energy within us, share our healing light and love, and use our gifts and talents to serve others. One opportunity that presents itself is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It calls us to honor everyone who has survived breast cancer and those who have made their life transitions due to breast cancer. There are many ways we can honor them. One way is to join me and other yoga lovers for a C-OM-Munity Circle of Healing Light and Love on Sunday, October 1 at 9:30am–10:00am in Malcolm X/Meridian Hill Park (located at 16th Street and Florida Avenue, NW ). The short morning practice will be dedicated to sending healing light and love to everyone who has been impacted by breast cancer. For more details, see the “What’s happening at kg yoga” section of the newsletter. Other examples of ways we can participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month include: participating in a physical activity that raises money for cancer research such as the AVON Walk for Breast Cancer (http://walk.avonfoundation.org) and Susan B. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation’s Race for the Cure (www.komen.org) volunteering at a breast cancer organization such as the National Breast Cancer Coalition (www.natlbcc.org) and Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization (www.y-me.org) creating a giving circle among family and friends that fundraises for organizations that conduct breast cancer awareness campaigns such as Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, www.sgrho1922.org/programs.html), Sisters Network (www.sistersnetworkinc.org), Nueva Vida Inc. (www.nueva-vida.org), Asian American Women’s Breast and Cervical Cancer Project (www.nawho.org/bcc.html), and Mautner Project (www.mauntnerproject.org) making an individual financial contribution to organizations that serve those living with breast cancer such as Howard University Hospital ’s Cancer Center (www.huhosp.org/HealthServices/Cancer.htm), Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts (www.smithfarm.com), or the African Women’s Cancer Awareness Association (www.awcaa.org) purchasing products that donate proceeds to breast cancer research and programs (www.pinkribbonshop.com) To read the entire newsletter visit http://kgyoga.blogspot.com.
