First, there are many species of Agave throughout central america. We aught to be saying Blue Agave or possibly the botanical names for these plants. Of course agave nectar can be obtained truly raw and living. Why is there repeated instances of accounts telling us what is not raw? We aught to continue our collective research for blue agave nectar that is truly raw, that's all. It is available now by way of the internet. I am a researcher for life. Contact me if you need links. Guest guest Posted November 21, 2006 Report Share Posted November 21, 2006 I agree with Rezz Raw or not raw, Agave is in the category of a non-animal sweetener. It is enough for me that it is not an animal product. I would not recommend using any sweetener excessively or even much at all. The main thing that is bad about any sweetener is the sugar content. It does not matter what the source, whether it is glucose, fructose, or orange juice, anything high in sugar should be moderated. The best natural sweeteners are fruit with the fiber of the fruit intact. However, Agave is a wonderful subtle way to sweeten a dressing or a dessert. Once in awhile I see little problems associated with using agave. The raw family can be a little too strict about certain things in our quest to find this fountain of youth. Life was meant to enjoy! Sensual delights are part of the lively feelings we all share on planet earth. Some things were meant to be treats, some things were meant to be staple foods. Keeping it all in perspective means enjoying things for what they are, not for what they are not. It is true that raw foods leads to a certain spirituality, and a certain sense of knowing the truth. But this truth is still always just your truth. What is true for one is not true for all. The agave debate is good and bad. Its good because it shows how thorough the raw community can be when it investigates food. We need to know the facts. It is bad because it does not honor the substance itself as a product of nature, giving its sweet life to us in many different forms, nor does it honor each individual's right to absolutely choose intuitively what to eat and when.
