Yes, several people have forwarded this editorial to me today. Here

is her site: http://www.ninaplanck.com/

Here is her blog: http://www.ninaplanck.com/index.php?

article=vegan_tragedy

This seems like the ideal way for Nina to promote her book, which is

based upon the premise that butter, eggs, lard and other 'comfort

foods' are good for you. Interesting.

Is there a dietician or nutrition expert here in the group who can

respond? (please share with the group, as well.) You may also review

the response on her homepage to some emails she has gotten in

(undoubtedly from some vegan readers) below.

Thanks!

vegan tragedy - Nyt op-ed

Babies are made from protein, fat, cholesterol, and fish oil. They

cannot thrive on plant foods alone. As I explain in the May 21 New

York Times, the minimum requirement is a vegetarian diet, including

dairy and eggs. But eating fish is even better for pregnant women and

their babies.

Some readers asked about my sources. Among many sources for this

piece, I interviewed a family practitioner who treats many vegetarian

and vegan families. The doctor's comments were useful but too long

for the Times. Here they are:

'The most significant issue with vegan infants is growth. I have seen

cases of severe anemia and protein deficiency in vegan infants

resulting in hospitalization and blood transfusion. Most breast-fed

vegan children will do okay until solids are introduced, as long as

the vegan mother is well nourished. Most commonly you see Vitamin B12

and iron deficiencies in vegan children. Vegan families must place

close attention to protein sources, calcium, Vitamins D and B12, and

iron. Often this can be achieved via fortified foods, but I've seen

that not all vegan parents want to choose these types of foods. Most

vegan families I've met don't understand the importance of fat intake

in the cognitive development of the baby.' The doctor also reiterated

what informed parents know: that soy milk is 'completely inadequate'

for babies.

Today a correspondent asked me to disclose whether I am paid by the

meat, dairy, fish, or egg industry. Good question. I am not. I'm an

independent food writer and I study the work of scientists and

nutritionists. After much study, I've concluded that evidence in

favor of diverse, omnivorous diets of traditional foods is

overwhelming. I was a skeptic myself - until I did some homework

about human nutrition.

I always use PCRM as the main source for diet and nutrition info of vegan diets. When I went there, I noticed there was already a rebuttal published to this misguided article:

http://www.pcrm.org/news/commentary070521.html

Here are the fact sheets they publish:

http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/veg_diets_for_children.html

http://www.pcrm.org/health/veginfo/vegetarian_kids.html

With this site, I think anyone is qualified to write a letter debunking the myths around the vegan diet, including my favorite, the Protein Myth.
