Hey Jeff,

What are the details again, about that Yoga you've been doing? My co-

worker tried it someplace near you in Fremont District. He said it

wasn't quite 108 degrees in the room (as purported), but he said it

was strenuous. Because of the heated room, his muscles didn't get

sore. Is this true?

I'm game to give it a try. Anybody else wanna go with me?

My comment: I'm sure it must be true. Before heading to Bali, when I

heard people speaking of Bikram Yoga, I thought they had to be nuts

to do strenuous exercise in a room that would make a person sweat

just sitting still. My thoughts have changed.

I hadn't been on a bike in probably almost 20 years, so when Alyson

and I decided that we were going to bike around Bali, I had visions

of my being too sore to even get off the bike, let alone walk! The

weather averaged 88 degrees and we averaged 31 miles a day. My

muscles never hurt! I thought I might sweat to death during the ride

(you could've wrung me out like a wet sponge) and I drank tons and

tons of water. Still -- the bottles of massage oil came home

unopened. If we had Bikram Yoga near Stevenson, I'd be there in a

flash!

I went to the Yoga College of India, 1054 N 34th St. Fremont

(Seattle), 206-547-0188 http://www.bikramyogaseattle.com

I went for 1 month. They heat the room to 105, although the first

session of the day did seem more comfortable (one person said 98 or

so). In some of the late classes the heat seemed pretty intense

towards the end of the session. I don't have a lot of insulation

( " insulation challenged " ) and a couple times the heat started getting

to me. I don't recall any sore muscles. I certainly noticed some

detoxing from the yoga. Especially at the first few sessions, after

the " fire breath " (forced exhaling) at the end, I noticed what tasted

like a lot of toxins exiting through my mouth. This continued for

other sessions, but gradually decreased (I went primarily for the

detoxing). The postures are supposed to help move toxins. I would

say it's true.

It's worth giving it a try. You can drop in for a session ($15.00).

Anrayleo was also doing Bikram Yoga, but was going to a place on

Queen Ann, I believe (or was it Capitol Hill?). The prices there

were a little cheaper, but no showers.

I participated in Bikram Yoga while I was pregnant all the way up until delivery... even in the hot days of the summer when the sun and heat was blasting through the open windows. I highly recommend it and your body will love it. Take some water just in case you do some sweating. regards, joyce - Jeff Rogers Tuesday, February 12, 2002 10:43 PM RawSeattle Re: [RawSeattle] Hot and steamy Yoga I went to the Yoga College of India, 1054 N 34th St. Fremont (Seattle), 206-547-0188 http://www.bikramyogaseattle.comI went for 1 month. I thoroughly enjoyed Bikram's-enough challenge, and a feeling of relaxation, satisfaction and accomplishment afterwards. They offer it at Rain City Yoga near Roosevelt and 50th as well (no showers). I plan to start, maybe in Fremont, again. Asya

I tried Bikram's at Ballard Firehouse Yoga, some time ago. I find I create more heat internally with ashtanga yoga, even at room temperature, than with Bikram's at 100 degrees. With the internal heat, soreness is not so much of a problem. In India, with seasoned masters of the practice who always push you to your limits, soreness develops. But teachers here are gentle. Classes at 14th and Union or North Lake Union if you want to try something different. It works for me.
