Guest guest
Central market has very good quality young coco's. I just bought two cases today for 17.50. It looks like a new brand today, but they should be good. Some coco's at the Asian markets have looked nasty. The Hau Hau market has a good price on Durian (0.69/lb.!) I bought some a few days ago. They were small, but quite tasty! I hope to make it to your potluck, but can't confirm yet. Guest guest
I got 2 cases of young coconuts a couple of weeks ago at 99 Ranch Markets and they were great. $7.10/case (9 in a case). They also sell them individually for $.79 each so you save a whole penny buy buying in bulk! They have durien for $.69/lb and have been good quality. -Tim --- kelpguy <kelpguy wrote: > hi all... > some of us hamster are staving for coconuts and durian, so it would be much > appreciated if someone from seattle who is coming to the b'ham > potluck/campout on the 14th could bring us a 'care package' (several cases > of this and that). i'll even give the do-gooder a bag of recently harvested > kelp for her/his services. > > btw, how is the quality and prices of coco's in seattle. the b'ham co-op's > asking $2.98 ea but i haven't brought one in months cuz most of them were > purple <yuk>... > > norm )~ > > ~~~ raw food... simply delicious ~~~ > > > >
Guest guest
Tim, I was buying there until recently because I live near it - the last few times I've gone they didn't seem as good (They looked fine, I just didn't feel as energized after eating them as I did originally.) Does anyone know how to tell the difference between being "over" a fruit, or the fruit being unhealthy? I've been wanting to get to Hau Hau to try theirs and see if it made a difference. I've heard conflicting information about growing methods for durian and coconut. Victoria said in a lecture that durian is ONLY grown organically, but someone else said that most durians come from Thailand where DDT is still used. I've not heard anything whether coconut is organic or pesticide-free. Thanks. Nick Hein - Timothy D. Guest guest
thanks for the prices and comments on quality of coconuts and durians in seattle. another store in the international district that has good prices and quality is lam's fish market. it's right behind hau hau on the other side of the street. i stopped there twice last summer and they had a big selection of durians. of course, since i'm not asian, they wanted to know how i knew about durians <grin>. norm )~ ~~~ raw food... simply delicious ~~~
Guest guest
> Victoria said in a lecture that durian is ONLY grown organically, but someone else said that most durians come from Thailand where DDT is still used.> Nick - I don't KNOW about the cultivation of coconuts. In Bali and, I think, the rest of Indonesia at least, where they are not grown for sale other than just in stands on the side of the roads, I believe they're still organically grown. In Thailand, they are grown for export and could indeed be using pesticides. I hope not. I have heard (and believe) that every coconut that comes into the US has been irradiated. Rob Miller, who spent some time in Thailand this past winter and spring (when not starting up a raw restaurant at Ubud Sari, a health retreat in Bali), would know quite a bit about the growing of durian for export. Maybe someone could ask him the next time they're in contact with him. I guess the solution would be for us all to go to Bali this winter and revel in the fresh right-off-the-tree durians. We can have sampling parties of the various varieties until we can't eat durian any more! My sweetie and I will be going for a month between Thanksgiving and Christmas (durian season). If you'd like to join Rob, Matt Samuelson, and David Wolfe in Bali, there's information on Rob's web site (http://www.rawfoodvacations.com) Annette
