Guest guest
Happy New Year to all! My suggestion regarding raw food discussions - We have this email list (RawSeattle) available for raw discussions. So, all one has to do is begin the discussions or ask the questions, etc. To invite people to another list for discussions which can be shared here may only reduce the number of people to share in discussions on the new list (if not everyone joins the new list.) The only reason these discussions should not take place here is if they would be discussion regarding all types of diets and nutrition (ie: cooked food, meat and dairy consumption, etc.), as this list is about raw vegan foods. There is no reason to NOT have raw vegan food/nutrition discussions here, so please open up appropriate discussions as you like. Many on the list may not have questions, but may have many ideas to share in discussions and in answer to questions (not that any of us have " the answers, " just our own answers.) Jeff PS: If anyone is looking for a larger number of people available to answer questions, as well as a larger number of long term raw foodists, the RawImmortal list (rawimmortal/) is worth checking out. They have over 400 people on the list. >I find that I am not getting what I need from this RawSeattle group >since useful information like this is rare and mostly its just chat. >I am curious if there is are people out there who would like to >start a Seattle Raw Food information group that would actually >discuss food and diet. Please let me know and I will start one if >there is interest. >Niz
Guest guest
I'm interested in a seperate list. Though, I do have a question. In creating a new group, can rawseattle be a recipient/r of the list. In this way, no one would be left out. In fact, this is true of the philosophy list or any other that's been split off from rawseattle. I guess it's a question of whether or not it would work. I like the idea of having more targeted groups and allowing folks to choose. Those who like the diversity of rawseattle, can just there and receive all the mail. Guest guest
As co-moderator of this list (the other moderator is Jeff Rogers), I thought I'd " chime in " on this topic. I understand where Niz and maybe some others are coming from: you want information and discussion on the raw diet and nutrition, and don't want to sort through messages not treating such topics. That concern is completely understandable, sensible, and valid. As Niz suggests, an appropriate option or alternative is to create a new list. I do agree with Jeff that doing so may dilute one or both groups, but not necessarily. Whoever wants to can join either or both groups according to his/her personal preference. I do agree with Jeff that whatever messages that such a new group would encourage, all of us members of this group would want posted here. I see merit to just sticking to this group, but I see equal merit to forming a new one for those who'd really like one. I think there has been some misunderstanding about this group. We as moderators haven't been as clear as we could have been on its purposes, I think. So let me try to explain. Christian Blackburn created the RawSeattle.org web site (and singlehandedly spent _literally_ hundreds of dollars and hours on it, by the way) to publicly circulate information about our group and activities in an ad-free environment. (The concern about it being ad-free is similar to Niz and others' concern about this list.) Christian also set up the web site to include the Event Botification mailing list to remind members of upcoming events. Then members asked Christian, and later, myself, to send out to our members messages that didn't relate to our posted events. Members (including myself) wanted to make announcements like, " Who wants to go in on an order of avocados? " , " Room for rent, " " XYZ for sale, " etc. Although I didn't fully stick to my guidelines, I felt that sending out such non-event related messages was an inappropriate use of the Event Notification mailing list. The demand by our members to broadcast other announcements remained, however. This demand was a large part of the motivation behind creating this RawSeattle eGroup. So this list here is actually in large part designed to be exactly what Niz and some others don't want it to be. :-) I apologize that this was not heretofore made clear. Although many messages posted here may not contain " useful information " according to some members' interests, other members may find it useful. Also, this forum is open to the general public, and _any_ information can get up here for at least some period of time. We as moderators will catch such messages and delete them when we deem them not to fit the list's purposes, but we can't prevent it from going out to members. It's too hard to please everyone, but we make reasonable attempts for it to work well for everyone. Sorry for the long message. I hope this clarifies matters. Thanks, Eric RawSeattle , " Jeff Rogers " <jeff@s...> wrote: > Happy New Year to all! > > My suggestion regarding raw food discussions - We have this email > list (RawSeattle) available for raw discussions. Guest guest
Thanks, Eric. Yes, it does clarify and remind us of the purpose. Still, if Niz does decide to create this new list, is it possible to ad rawseattle as a member (to address diluting the original group)? Guest guest
The problem with that is where the replies end up - members of rawseattle (and not the new list) replying to a post from a new list that got passed on to rawseattle would go to rawseattle alone unless the member included said list in the response as well. Rawseattle doesn't seem to get a huge amount of traffic as it is from my perspective, and I don't see how adding another list with a different name will result in more quality posts - the problem to me seems to be underutliization of existing avenues... Guest guest
Ditto David. Precisely what I think. As Jeff said: those who want to talk about raw food info, why don't you post your info or ask your questions. They will be much appreciated. Rawseattle is a small local group. I think it's different from those large national or international discussion group. We meet frequently for potlucks and so on. At potlucks we get to talk about raw food to our hearts' content so we don't bother to key in all these infomation. I for one often don't have time to post as much as I want to. Because rawseattle is a local group, I feel we are like a family and we use the list to connect to each other. To me the list is for rawfooders as well as for raw food info. I am interested about what other rawfooders are doing besides eating raw food, i. e. fast, eyesight improvement, dental care, etc. As David said our list is not crowded at all. There is plenty of room for people to post raw food info. Helen Rawseattle doesn't seem to get a huge amount of traffic as it is from my perspective, and I don't see how adding another list with a different name will result in more quality posts - the problem to me seems to be underutliization of existing avenues... Guest guest
Of course, we do have over 100 members on this list, most of whom are not regular visitors to our potlucks. It would be nice to hear from some of them to see what this list means to them and what they would like to see happen. Jeff
Guest guest
I think David and Helen have good points. I can also see other sides as well. The potlucks are a great place to have the types of discussions you crave Niz and I for one, would love to see you again at potlucks! :-) I also agree with the notion of " create it--and they will come. " In other words, simply put out the info/questions on the topic(s) of your interest and see what comes of it? Generally somebody will respond....that's just the way we are, eh? Having read all these posts AFTER I posted the invitation to " The Great Experiment " in Feb with mediation and spoonbending with the mind--- I realize that had there been a link on the rawseattle.org website for me to click on, taking me to an appropriate list--- I would have posted it there. So.... my potential solution is this. Since we ARE a small group, I don't believe we need all those possible lists that Jeff posed--- but maybe one more. Consolidate all food type topics/potlucks/raw events/recipes into one list. All philosphy, and all else iinto another list. Add the second link below the existing link on the rawseattle website. This will also drive more traffic to the website, alerting people to anything new that might be there. comments? Happy New Year everyone!
