Guest guest
Any tips for staying on the raw diet when you are tempted beyond belief? I've been 90-95% raw for 4 months now. But I don't know how much longer I can stand feeling so deprived. I feel hungry all the time, and all the nuts and avocados in the world don't seem to fill me up. I crave carbs, and other comfort foods. I have read many books on the raw diet. And they are all good. I want to do this so much! I know it would continue to be good for me, if I could just stay strong. But my husband and kids eat a regular (organic) diet, and I always want what they eat. Sorry to whine, nice people, but I am losing it here. I feel scared that I will blow it all and bury my face in the mashed potatoes . . . Any tips? Off-list is fine. Thanks for listening. -- Corrie www.CorriesLeapofFaith.siteblast.com Only where love and need are one, And the work is play for mortal stakes, Is the deed ever truly done For heaven and the future's sakes. Guest guest
Corrie My own transition to raw food was more gradual than I had thought. During each transition I focused on my own internal guidance and that kept me from " temptation " . Instead of thinking that I was deprived or denied, I reminded myself why I had chosen to do this lifestyle change. The knowledge from my Heart centered beliefs sustained me. For it was from of Love of myself I chose to change and continue to do so. Being with others who share similar beliefs can be a great morale booster. The potlucks would be a wonderful resource for you. I wish you strength of faith. Guest guest
The biggest success factor for me in sticking to an all-raw diet was the support of others. I've been to every gathering of our group unless there is a more important conflicting event in my schedule. Many others have said that support from others has been very effective for them as well. Spending time with this group of people has helped me not only to sustain this diet, but has been very instrumental in helping me improve my life in general. I have found that the more time I spend with people who have the energy I want, the more I am able to somehow " absorb " that energy. The benefits I get from them, and then in turn they get from me, continues in an upward spiral from there. :-) One tip I liked was, I think, about a Tibetan raw guy. His idea was never to deny himself, because that just feeds more energy to that desire. He told himself, " I'll have something cooked...tomorrow. " :- ) He allowed himself the option, but always just " put it off " this way. I thought that was clever.
Guest guest
corrie, if you crave carbs, then i suggest you eat more carbs. eat apples, bananas, grapes, tropicals, citrus, dates, and others until satiated. but don't combine them too much. fix frozen bananas ice cream, coconut-carob-date pudding, coconut-vanilla bean smoothies. try not to eat too many fatty foods. that gets me to craving cooked foods more. one thing that is helping me now is sprouting wild rice. there is a recipe for it at www.sunfood.com, i think, fred patanaude's site. it has avocado, oil, and other veggies in it also which helps fill you up. save this recipe for a special evening, or a potluck. take advantage of the potlucks. by the string of replies you are getting, you know you will get support there. and don't feel guilty if you don't sit at the table with the family. my family hates it when i do that, but sometimes i can't sit there with them. joe >"Cornelia Moore" >RawSeattle > >[RawSeattle] Hungry and Cold . . . Guest guest
More tips....What works for me: Make up a whole bunch of foods ahead of time, and replicate the very foods you normally eat the most of but raw food style. Your palate craves the familiar so give it that--only raw food style. When I can't eat cold food which is often in cold weather, I make a raw food soup or stir " fry " with quite a lot of raw sauce of some kind, and I gently warm it in a pan on the top stove on Med. Low constantly stirring, I pre-warm my plates under hot running water in the sink at the same time. I dish up the food once it is just warm, actually a common temp. that cooked food is eaten at by the time folks get around to it, and the warm plates help keep the food warm giving a familiar sensation to the palate but the food is raw. Also, sometimes my body just can't handle cold food and if I haven't thought ahead to take things out of the fridge and let them sit, I'll even warm my fruit in this way before I eat it. I get into trouble when I get too busy and don't have the time to prepare all my foods ahead to have on hand. I used to order once in a while from Karen Parker. Do people know if she is still around and catering raw? And if people have other names of folks I would appreciated it as from time to time I get caught and would order up food once in a while. Guest guest
hi corrie, your biggest challenge with staying on raw food is to overcome your thoughts...if you are craving carbs, this is natural because we are meant to eat carbs but the fruit variety not the complex carb starch kind. So in other words the craving for carbs is universal and natural. I would recommend that you eat low starch vegetables such as carrots, parsnips, beets etc. as a mode of weaning yourself off complex carb cravings. Also, I would recommend juicing a variety of different vegetables, preferably mineral rich leafy greens to help calm your anxiousness about food. Yes, the goal is to replace complex carb intake with simple carb intake in the form of fruit but, you must use other means to satisfy/cope with your hunger/de-tox. I would further suggest that if your stomach is full, go into nature and do breath work, or jog or stretch - get in touch with the natural cycle of life it is food too! Not all de-tox is comfortable but you'd be surprised how you feel after a jog instead of relying on yet more food to cope with uncomfortable feelings... no wild animal ever grows old, joyce > " joe williamson " <jrwmojo >RawSeattle >RawSeattle >Re: [RawSeattle] Hungry and Cold . . . Some people say that if you are craving carbs it is actually protein that you need. Gabriel Cousens and people like Dr Perricone now promote a low carb (any sugar) diet. In his book " The Wrinkle Cure " Dr Perricone says that sugars cause inflammation in the cells which can lead to aging, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. In the Nov/Dec issue of The Well Being Journal Prof. Joel Levitt says that Hypoglycemia from excess sugars cause symptoms such as anxiety, depression, headaches, fatigue etc. Dr Christopher Yashpal Jayne said that the sugars in bananas, dates, carrots, corn and pineapple cause instant aging. Keeping blood sugar even is essential to good health. I believe that most raw fooders get this wrong. Avoid foods that deliver sugar too fast. Eat several small meals a day. Eat sugary food with other food to slow the absorbtion, even if the food combining police say its wrong. I have found that Macadamia nuts, pinenuts, and hemp seeds are helpful in achieving a good balance. Also make sure you get a good supply of omega 3's from hemp or flax seeds. > I would recommend juicing a variety of different vegetables, preferably > mineral rich leafy greens to help calm your anxiousness about food. David Wolfe, in his book " The Sunfood Diet " says that it is Greens, not nuts, that make us feel full. The common recommended amount is 1 Lb of greens a day.
