Guest guest
I am always looking for good oranges--a more palatable source of calcium. I haven't reported anything since last November because I didn't find anything good until recently. The order of satsuma and navel oranges from Hickory Tree Grove turned out to be another disappointment. I have given up on them. Jeff, have you order more from them? Are the late crops better? I got some pretty good valencia oranges from Central Market. Their brix levels are around 14, which is good. On the flower end some reach 15 or 16.These are about as good as those Rainbow Valley valencias I got last November and early December (brix 15, 16, 17). These valencias selling in Central Market now are from "natura". There are two varieties in the box I got. One type is yellow and the other has red streaks in the pulp with very tender texture. A few of the yellow ones are so sweet that they taste like orange candies. They look tree-riped to me, juicy and thin skinned. They are 98 cents per # or 21.25 per box. BTW those Rainbow Valley valencias were tree-riped. I forgot to forward the email I got from Earthbound/Rainbow Valley telling me the valencias were tree-riped. Actually I didn't need to ask. Those valencias looked perfectly tree-riped. Helen Following is the emai from Earthbound Farm Subject: RE: oranges tree-riped? Yes our organic oranges are tree-ripened and Rainbow Valley Orchard is one of our growers. I hope this information is helpful. Guest guest
>Thanks for the current citrus news, Helen. I've bought cases of oranges from the Naltura label before. I have always been pleased with them. It's good to hear they still sell a well ripened product. Let us know if you ever find tree ripened grapefruit. Guest guest
Joyce, When I have time I'll go to PCC and check them out. Honey oranges are never sour. I bought some non-organic ones from chinatown but they weren't very good. BTW, both varieties of natura valencias I reported have big seeds too. The second box I got seems not as good as the first one but still pretty good though. Some of the first batch I bought lasted 2 and half weeks and none of them rotted without refrigeration. A lot of navels I got rotted and thrown away. Quick rotting is one of the signs of poor quality.
