Guest guest
For those of you who like grapefruit, Central Market has organic ones for 48 cents a pound- I bought some yesterday. They have them displayed in a huge stack when you first walk into the produce side of the store. The fruit is medium sized, juicy, with light pink flesh; there are few seeds, but the taste is pretty good- not bitter. I do not have a refractometer yet, so cannot give a Brix reading. Don't know how long the sale will be for. Gideon
Guest guest
Hey, what's a refractometer and why is it important? What is a brix reading? Guest guest
Tanya, Brix level of a certain fruit or vegetable is the percentage of soluble solids in its juice. They could be protein, minerals or sugar although mostly sugar with nowadays produce. A refractometer is an optical tool that gives you the brix level of a drop of juice. A drop of distilled water will show 0 on the reading of brix level. By comparing with the brix level I got with a reference chart I can get an idea about the quality of the produce. Guest guest
Thanks Gideon. I'll see if I can get around to check them out. The Rio Stars from South Texas I got last time were pretty sour and I felt they were croding my teeth. I only opened one and the brix level is 12. 14 is considered good but 12 is the best we've got so far. Those I got earlier were all 10 (average) or lower brix. These Honey Gold are also from South Texas. My guess is they picked at the peak of the season. They are juicy and look very ripe. They are a great bargain at 48 cents a pound. Since they are having a special there isn't really a advantage of getting a box. I heard that the sale will last for a week, as long as the supply lasts I suppose.
