Guest guest
Hello! I have been led by Spirit to explore the Raw/Living foods diet. My intuition tells me that it is right for me and will help me to grow as a spirit and a person. I just read Victoria's book, " 12 Steps to Raw Foods " and I have explored some websites. Her book was very encouraging and also helped me to connect with how much I am " addicted " to cooked food. I hadn't realized it! The website left me feeling totally overwhelmed! I'm not sure how to get started. I live in Astoria, Oregon which is a very conservative community. I have my doubts that there are other raw foodists here. So, I guess you will be my closest support group. Glad you are there! I have a tiny kitchen and not a lot of money. So, what kind of equipment do I need to go to a 100% raw food diet? I see things on the websites about needing a Dehydrator, blender, Juicer, Vitamix, food processor, etc. and I know I cannot afford to go out and buy all of this equipment. Nor am I sure they will fit into my kitchen. Any suggestion? Should I clear my kitchen of all cooked food type things? Victoria mentioned several months of feeling really ill. I worry about this, because I am alone and support myself. I cannot miss work. Sorry! I realize I am getting carried away with worry and I know well that Spirit guides in all things, so I will just let go and wait for assistance. I am really thrilled about discovering this and the support that is available. I am looking forward to hearing back from you! Blessings to You, Laura
Guest guest
Laura The best advice I can give is for you is to be gentle with yourself and continue to let your inner guidance steer your course. I had been following spirit guidance and while reviewing my notes, was surprised to find that my own transition had been steered in a very unique way. I was vegetarian then vegan then finally raw vegan. I did not have the withdrawals I heard so many people talk about in the support groups. At the same time I was the only one in my family that was changing their diet. I still cook food for my family while I eat raw. It is possible. Remind yourself that it is a lifestyle change that you have chosen. As for the kitchen tools, I find that I use my food processor, Vita Mix blender and dehydrator the most. My juicer hardly gets used at all. I would start with the Mixer then the food processor as budget allows. Wishing you love and support. Guest guest
Laura, I found the most important thing was a source of a variety of good-quality organic produce, nuts, and seeds. For kitchen tools I started with just a knife and a cutting board, then added using an Osterizer blender. In the year since I went raw I bought other items as I went along, but don't use them much. (Food processor $40, Champion Juicer $150, Dehydrator $175) I still don't have a Vita-mix and may never get one because of limited kitchen space. I would also second Ramona's suggestion that you increase your raw percentage gradually if you want to avoid cravings and sickness. I also went veg, vegan, raw progressivelly. It helped that I found substitutes for foods as I went along, it was easier to give something up when I was getting something new to replace it. You'll feel great once you're through the transition. And contact this list, or get someone you can contact directly for difficult times. There are alot of beginners in this area right now and you can probably find someone to help you ride out the transition most joyfully. Best wishes. Guest guest
Without reading the other replies to you first, let me give you my advice: If you are on a limited budget, I would not throw out all the cooked food. You can transition by steadily increasing raw food consumption and decreasing cooked food consumption. I would, however, throw out meat and dairy right away. You can buy dehydrated foods if you cannot by a dehydrator and make your own. You should be able to get a blender at a second-hand store at a very cheap price. A good way to save up money for the things you will need is just to fast one day a week and save the money you would of spent on food. If Spirit led you to begin this, Spirit can bring someone there into your life to help you begin. Guest guest
Thanks so much for your good advice. I had arrived at the same conclusion, last night, as I laughed at myself a bit for allowing myself to stress over this. I guess sometimes I have to do that before I can just let go and go with the flow! I haven't eaten dairy for quite a while. It wrecked my stomach. So, I have been on soy products for quite a while and that makes that a whole lot easier. The meat think isn't a problem either. I really don't like it. I think it is all about relearning. I had thought about starting a meal at a time. I usually have a banana for breakfast each day, and I'm finding that I sleep a lot better at night when I just have a salad at dinner time. So, I guess I am already on my way, huh? Good to have some direction from people who have "been there" for awhile!
