Guest guest
I hope you are not tired of listening to me singing praises of these natura valencia oranges. I just have to report this again as I am on my sixth box. I thought the season is coming to the end for oranges but I found the brix level of these oranges are getting higher. I kept monitoring through each box I got. In the last box I was getting brix 14-17 mostly and found a couple hit 18. Most amaizing is that i'm getting a lot of fuzzy lines on the demarcation which is quite rare since our food has generally been hybridized to the high sugar goal. From my sixth box i am getting more brix 17, 18. These valencias are from Mexico. It looks like they still have some fertile land there. I hope it will not be contaminated by the Monsanto junk. Another wonderful thing is these valencias are $20.00 a box ( 50 cents a pound) in Central Market. Other good buys: bananas are still 39 cents/lb; kiwi 5 for a dollar, pretty good too; young coconuts are 6.25 a case. I also bought english peas and sugar snap peas. They are $1.98/lb which I thinik is a good deal. And of course everything I am talking about except coconuts is certified organic and that goes without saying. I think coconuts are naturally grown. Guest guest
Helen, Thanks so much for posting this information. Robert's also been telling me how great they were, as he had some at the potluck last night. I had ordered a box right after you mentioned them last time and was a bit disappointed. Robert said you had gotten some boxes that weren't as good too. So maybe if I call Central today and have them hold a box it will be the same shipment that yours came from. Thanks again! Guest guest
Hi Helen- Please don't stop with the brix postings, or commenting on delicious fruits when you find them! A big reason for me in tuning into the group is to find out where the good food is. Thanks- Gideon (W. Guest guest
Nora, Actually almost all the boxes I got brixed 14 and above. Most of the early ones were 14 but the recent one mostly around 15, 16. A few brixed 13. You were probably disappointed because they didn't taste particularly sweet. They don't taste as sweet as some of the mandarins that brixed only 12. I like the flavor of these natura valencias. It's a refreshing orangy flavor, not so sugary, never satiating. I ate seven in a row yesterday. In my second and third boxes the sections looked kind of dry but they were fully ripe. Another undesirable part of these valencias for eating is the thick membrane, but I take it as a sign of a healthy plant. I suspect there is a lot of calcium in the membrane but I don't like to chew it so I kind of pull some the center part off and compost the craps. Guest guest
Hello Helen, Sorry for the ignorance, but what is 'brix' and what is the significance of the fuzzy lines of demarcation? Also, what's the address of that Central Market in Shoreline? Thanks. Emily > Hi Helen- > > Please don't stop with the brix postings, or commenting on delicious fruits when > you find them!
