Guest guest
I am just curious about how you all choose to eat. I have been eating raw for about three months now, and am still figuring things out. So, if any of you would be up for answering a couple of questions, I would greatly appreciate it! 1. How long have you been raw? 2. Are you strictly a raw vegan or do you add raw non-vegan foods into your diet? 3. What regimine of raw foods does your body most positively respond to (mostly fruits, mostly sprouts, raw grains, raw nuts and seeds, raw animal foods, raw juices, etc.)? Thank you all SO much! I don't see much discussion here about stuff like this (though I have only been on a short while). I hope it isn't inappropriate. What regimine of raw foods does your body most positively >respond to (mostly fruits, mostly sprouts, raw grains, raw nuts and >seeds, raw animal foods, raw juices, etc.)? Mostly organic fruits, eaten by themselves (not mixed), organic greens. I've been eating more simply the last few months, with some complicated mixing on occasion, but the frequency is diminishing. My body seems to enjoy low fat. I still, on occasion, will go back to some avocado, but even that is becoming rare. I recognize it's a path, not a black and white, this is what you eat, this is what you don't eat kind of thing. Avo's, coconuts, raw casseroles, patés, raw nuts and seeds, and other complicated and heavy foods are all wonderful foods to help people stay raw. And they are likely better than people's old diets. Are they ideal? I believe not, but they certainly help us along the way. They are a raw foods that we can eat if we crave something heavier. I believe it's better to eat the heavier stuff once in a while, than to feel deprived. I find, though I may go back and forth with certain types of foods (like fats,) the amount and frequency become less with time. Each time I go back to it, it is a reminder that I don't feel quite as good when I eat it. I have used raw juices over the time I have been raw, but that is extremely rare now. It diminished over time. I don't recall the last juice I drank. If you're drawn to it, go for it. There may be a time that you don't feel a need for it. >Thank you all SO much! >I don't see much discussion here about stuff like this (though I >have only been on a short while). I hope it isn't inappropriate. It's certainly appropriate, we just get side tracked on other topics. These are all questions that we may have been asking at one time and there are probably lots of others on the list thinking the same questions. So... thanks for being the one to ask! Guest guest
Hi, Shawna – No, this isn’t inappropriate at all! Very good questions! 1 – I’ve been raw for over 2 years – I started converting in January/February 2001, and “went for it” in early April of that year. I had a few relapses after that time, my last intentional cooked/processed food was in June of that year. 2 – The only non-vegan food that I include is honey. We have our own hive of bees, and our own big tubs of honey, which is not pasteurized. The bees are treated as humanely as possible, with minimal disturbances (which are the most common cause of bee death). Otherwise, unpasteurized dairy is not legal to be sold in the state, and the only way a person could get raw dairy (which I grew up on) would be to fence off their back yard and buy a cow!! (And be prepared to milk her twice a day, have her bred every year, then figure out what to do with the offspring, etc. They’re great animals, I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for a nice golden-brown Jersey cow, but they do involve some work and time commitment.) Meat is not safe to eat raw these days, nor are poultry or fish. There’s just too much contamination. 3 – I find that if I want to do some fast healing, the raw juices seem to be most effective, they are a quick “pick-me-up”. I primarily tend to lean toward the fruits (including the botanical fruits like tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and avocadoes) preferentially over the others. I find the nuts/seeds a bit addictive, and I probably shouldn’t eat as many of those as I do. (Plus my fondness of dates – that combination is likely why my weight hasn’t settled out as low as I’d hoped for.) Some of the raw-food gurus who have been doing this much longer than I have feel that the grains are not very good for us, and frankly I find them to be too much of a bother. I do sprouts in the winter when the fresh local greens are less available, but I find them superfluous during the fresh produce season. Hope this helps. I highly recommend that you try to attend the festival in Oregon later this month, you can pick up a wealth of information there.
