Guest guest
please pay special attention to your teeth if you are eating citrus another local raw fooder and i have recently had a unusual amount of cavities which we attribute to eating immature citrus if it stings your lips/mouth i would question whether it's worth eating citrus that stings usually brixes low on the charts it's gotta be affecting the rest of you system also (BONES???) i've never had citrus ''bite'' that was truly tree ripened of coarse it's rare that you're gonna find ripe citrus in the stores the ripe citrus is found on the ground under the tree be sure to thoroughly rinse your mouth with fresh water after eating citrus or any fruit for that matter norm )~ ...... raw food, simply wonderful ..... Guest guest
Thanks for your post, Norm. I've also noticed sensitivity this winter where I had none before. I've been eating a lot of citrus. The oranges this year are not nearly as good as the ones I was getting last year, the skins are even partially green. My solution has been to order organic tree-riped citrus from a farm in Texas. They are amazingly affordable -- $45 for 72 oranges, including shipping. If they're the size of an average Valencia, that's only about $1.25 per pound. I just ordered them last week so haven't received them yet. I'll report here on what they're like, in case anybody else is interested. Guest guest
I suspect that the malic acid in low brix apples ruins teeth too. I have felt something on my teeth after eating a low quality apple. Guest guest
Hi Nora, Could you please send the address for ordering from the farm in Texas? Thank you so much. Looking forward to hearing your report on these. Janaki Rose - " Nora Lenz " <nmlenz <RawSeattle > Saturday, December 13, 2003 11:55 AM Re: [RawSeattle] citrus advisory > Thanks for your post, Norm. Guest guest
It's called South Tex, and the phone number is 888-895-0108. I forgot to keep the website address. Sorry. I'll post all the info on the listserv when I get the oranges (provided they are good!). Guest guest
The valencia oranges being sold now at PCC are incredibly good ;sweet, ripe and juicy and far better than the few oranges i have recently got there. Guest guest
Great! Thanks for that feedback, John. I haven't tried them in a couple weeks. I'll have to check them out again, maybe they're a different crop now. I'm still waiting on my Texas oranges. South Tex apparently only ships on Friday, to ensure that the oranges won't be sitting in some warehouse over the weekend, awaiting delivery. If these oranges are as good as the company is conscientious, I'll be in for a treat. Guest guest
Yes, They are good. I just tried one, brixed pretty high. I am not sure about the figure I got somehow, will report my next sample. The one I ate today had a lot of flavor. I had disappointment with South Texas before, I forgot it was last year or the year before. Some of the oranges didn't look like tree-riped. The year before they had very good Hamlins sold in PCC but last year I didn't see them. The harvest and quality is different every year and at different time of the year. I think you can order South Texas citrus through PCC because PCC used to get their product. It would be cheaper if you order through PCC. Valencias in Central Market are also tree-riped (see attached email below). you can tell when you open it. They brix about 12 or a little above. 12 is what I consider border line. The oranges also taste all right for me at this level. Below 12 is not really worth eating. Helen, Lake forest park email I got last year from Earthbound Farm: Hello Thank you for your email. Yes our organic oranges are tree-ripened and Rainbow Valley Orchard is one of our growers. I hope this information is helpful.
