Guest guest
For those who have had more experience with water fasting than I have: Is it a good idea to do a water fast when the weather is as cold as it is now & is projected through the next several days? I'd been planning on doing a water fast beginning the first, and going for a few days. I'm having second thoughts, given the weather forecast. Thanks - Sue
Guest guest
Fresh air is good during a fast (actually, any time,) so keeping a window open near you is good. It may chill the room you are in a bit, but would be beneficial. You may want to offset the cold with a portable heater. If you're in bed with lots of blankets, it's not so bad. Daily sun on the skin is also a benefit, but not always easy in Seattle, especially when it's cold. The Essene teachings suggest fresh air and sunshine on the entire body. That's a bit tough at 35-40 degrees! I had scheduled myself a fast after Thanksgiving. The ideal would be to do it when (or where) it is warm and sunny, but that was not the case for me. I did it when it worked best for my schedule. If the timing works best for you now, go for it. A warm bed will offset the cold outside. Guest guest
For me the determining factor would be the amount of work (heavy labor) I would be doing. If your work schedule is light, then it would be a good time. If you're like me, I stay inside anyway when it is really cold out. Guest guest
Thanks, Jeff. Now if I can just keep my husband in the same room with that open window, maybe I'll have a warm bed! (Or keep the cats in there...) I went out walking yesterday in the sunshine. I normally try to get out around Green Lake or along the Burke-Gilman Trail near Woodinville on my day off (Monday), usually around midmorning. It was too cold then, so I waited until after 1:30, and it was STILL too cold!! I walked anyway, but not for as long as I normally would. The sun was out and beautiful, but the heat just wasn't there. I'll be glad when it starts getting higher in the sky again, so we get a little more of the warmth. I'm just feeling like I need to clear things out a bit, after all the rich & mixed foods of the holiday season, even the raw foods. With Thursday being a holiday, and I've kept my church schedule to a minimum this week, I only will have one work day during the time of the fast. I know it's not ideal to work while fasting, but when I work Tuesdays through Fridays, and often have heavier church commitments on Sundays and rehearsals Thursday evenings (not this week), this seems to be the least of the proverbial evils. Lent would be a more appropriate time, but then I have the rehearsals, extra services, no holidays, etc., so that doesn't work well either. Guest guest
Sue , If it fits with your plans it would be better during warmer weather i would think . Then you may be more inclined to witness the beautiful outdoors more and with perhaps the heightened sense of awareness one can get during fasting. But could be done whether it is cold or not. Guest guest
Winter is a perfect time to fast for me. I have been doing it the past six years and once before in Mexico though. With the dark long nights I think this is the season for hibernation and it feels good to spend more time in bed under warm covers. Summer time is so much fun. I don't want to take time out for fasting and miss out any activities, farmers' market, berry picking, hiking, camping, festivals, etc. I had to miss out New Years Eve party for fasting though. I know it's not ideal >to work while fasting... It's certainly best to lay down and do nothing during the fast to allow the body to do it's best work. Last year I did a five day water fast. I didn't have the luxury of a week of vacation to use, but did have three days. I worked the first two days of my fast, then gave my body a break. I finally had the opportunity to do an extended fast without having to do anything. It's much better that way. If you have to work 1 day, I'm sure it'll still be worth it.
