Guest guest
Does anyone know of Ozone-treated swimming pool in the area? I live in Kenmore, and am willing to drive a little to get there. I'm training for some open-water swims this summer, and have been swimming at the Northshore YMCA and Lynnwood Rec. Both pools are chlorinated, and it's (obviously) effecting my sinuses and lungs. I would love an alternative. I'm planning to buy a wet suit as soon as I save up the money (next month?), but in the meantime . . . I love to swim, and want/need to train. Any thoughts? Thanks much, Tina Bystrom
Guest guest
I can't help you out with an ozone-treated swimming pool, but if you want to avoid the chlorine, you can swim at the many swimming beaches at our lakes. There is a list of them with a map at http://dnr.metrokc.gov/wlr/waterres/lakes/bacteria.htm I looked on the web for non-chlorinated pools and only came up with some UK sites and a place in Connecticut. This could be a real business opportunity for somebody. Guest guest
We belong to allstar fitness in Woodinville. They have a very nice indoor pool that is non-chlorinated. I love it as both my boys are asthmatic and I don't like the fumes for them. We enjoy the kiddie pool there. It is a nice gym as well. Here is the link: http://www.allstarfitness.com/welcom_to_allstar.html I'm not sure if they use ozone but at least it's not chlorine. Guest guest
Yes, a couple thoughts... First, I do not know of any ozone pools in the area, but would certainly be curious. This topic has been discussed before (offline), but not resolved. Regarding chlorine, the stuff is TOXIC! I've noticed the effects on my body. While living in Hawaii, I did not swim in chlorine in probably over 10 years, then when visiting California for my cousin's wedding, spent time in a pool and hot tub, the next morning I awoke with bad " bronchitis " . That was the first time I noticed the corelation between chlorine and bronchitis. I've noticed the relationship since, as well. I highly recommend avoiding chlorine and using dechlorinating shower filters. The body will not have as much toxins to remove and there will be less tissue damage and better hair and skin!. Regarding wet suits, I have a box of several wetsuits I pulled out of my closet a couple days ago. I was going to sell them on ebay. It all depends on your body size/type, as to whether they would fit you. They are men's small. I have a set of farmer johns (1/4 " ) and a thinner full lenth suit (faded, but works), and a " shorty " . An option for us financially challenged (just depends on the fit!) Guest guest
I do know that some people use a certain product in their hot tubs which keeps it healthy and clean without the general chlorine and sanitizing chemicals. This is a non-chemical/toxic product. This is to replace all your household chemical/cleaners, body products, etc. I find it works wonders for me. Helps balance ph and reduce acidosis. 182728.themastersmiracle.com. - Tina Bystrom RawSeattle Saturday, March 27, 2004 8:13 AM [RawSeattle] Ozone (non-chlorine) Pool? I am so torn up about this. I have been a swimmer my whole life. Interstingly (and not surprising) I swam in pools a lot as a kid, and also had bronchitis a lot. Never made the connection. At a year raw, my body is not about to tolerate the poison. I've tried it a few times since January, and each time I end up sick. I HATE this! As with so many things, why do " we " continue to use chlorine when we know how toxic it is? And when there are several other choices? It's really frustrating, and I'm pitching a bit of a fit. I'll continue to search for alternatives, and workout in other ways in the meantime (she says, grumbling . . .). > Regarding wet suits, I have a box of several wetsuits I pulled out of > my closet a couple days ago. I am still in the process of losing body weight/size (now slower than at first), and am pretty sure I'll go down another couple of sizes before all is said and done. Of course, swimming is part of that process, so I'd like to find a suit I can wear now, even if I have to get another one later. Unfortunately, as with many things, it may require serious litigation, or threatened litigation, for things to change. They are trying to " fight " " bacteria " , etc. (on our behalf). I'm sure chorine is believed to be the cheapest in the short run (but at what expense in the long run? people don't understand the connection to disease.) >What brands are the suits, Jeff? One brand (the 1/4 inch farmer johns, with separate top) is a Parkway. It is probably too stiff for swimming. The one-piece surfer's suit (with the zipper in back) - I am not sure of the brand. It says size 16. I't basicaly equivelent of a men's small. I don't know what type of sizing that is. The shortie has the name stamped on it " Harvies of Hawaii " . Thanks for the info, though. Tina
Guest guest
I am a member of the Allstar fitness club in West Seattle . The water in the pool consists of a mix of bromine and chlorine unless it has changed since asking. So i wonder if the Woodenville site has anything different. You could give them a call to find out. Best of luck! John Finance Tax Center - File online. File on time. http://taxes./filing.html
Guest guest
When we joined the Woodinville site last October they told us there was no chlorine. I should probably ask again to verify. But I take my 2 1/2 and 4 year old children there and there is no chlorine smell at all on them. Also not noticing any asthma reaction, which we have encountered the last 2 chlorine exposures with my 4 year old. So the water at this site is pretty mild, IMO. I'm sure they will be happy to give a tour and discuss details of the pool. They are new and still working to get clients, so are pretty accomadating. The said they used primariy Ozonation, with some chlorine shock treatments. So, I went out there (with my daughter, and my fingers crossed), for a tour and a test swim. Turns out they do chlorinate it in addition to the ozonation, but at a much lower ppm than most other pools (about 1-1/2 as opposed to 2- 1/2). I was disappointed to learn there was even that much, but took the test swim anyway. It was far less nasty than the ususal. I couldn't really smell it, it didn't sting my sinuses, and I don't smell like chlorine after the fact (nor does my daughter's hair, and she didn't wear a cap). That's reassuring, anyway. My skin isn't really itchy or dry, either. I got a 7-day pass and plan to check it out a couple more times this week before deciding whether or not to join. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking for even better alternatives. Thanks, all, for your input/info on this. If you hear of anything else out there, please let me know. I e-mailed the contact person for the PNW Master Swimmers. Maybe he's heard of something. Cheers, Tina

I did take a tour yesterday, and talked with the lifeguard. He said they use 1-1/2ppm of chlorine at all times, and that there is a sensor in the back, so when the pool use goes up, so does the amount of chlorine being pumped in. Still, I got in the pool just after the pool use went from 5 to 25, and I had no chlorine smell on me, nor could I feel it in my sinuses or taste it. It's still there, apparently, but it may be a low enough level to live with (for your kid's asthma, and for me while I'm training indoors). I'm going to go a couple more times this week. Thanks for the recommendation, Miti. Hopefully this will be the solution for me.
