Guest guest
Good evening, While at my local Mediterranean market I picked up the latest in-season item: almonds still in the shell. Does anyone have tips on these? My sense is that they are nutritionally better because they are picked fresh and in season. I've tried a few and they taste good raw. I expect to use them to top salads. Any other suggestions? Any cautions? Thanks!
Guest guest
Hi Nick, Trader Joes was selling some green almonds in the outer shell a couple months ago but the nuts were unripe and inedible (imo), and they were very expensive. The only other experience I have with them was last year when Robert brought some from California that he had picked off the tree. I'd definitely buy them if I had regular opportunities because the outer covering that's normally removed during harvesting allows most of the moisture to be retained in the nut, which is a very good thing of course. I wouldn't be surprised if even the unshelled almonds we normally see in the stores aren't dried, since this keeps the nuts from molding, which does happen fairly quickly after they are picked. You might want to refrigerate them if it's very warm where you are. You can keep them in an airtight container in the fridge but if you don't refrigerate them keep them in a breathable container like a mesh bag or something. Enjoy! Guest guest
Nora, Thanks. These were about $4.50/lb which is expensive considering how much you end up with. That helps keep me from overdoing it though - and I have a tendency to do so with dried almonds. Thanks again.
