ARUNDHATI ROY with DAVID BARSAMIAN Tuesday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall

Seattle We are honored to welcome Arundhati Roy back to Seattle - seven long

years after her first visit, which was early in the public life of her Booker

Prize-winning novel, The God of Small Things. This evening brings her to the

U.S. - and Seattle -- from her home in India, with world and U.S. political

matters much in mind. Since 1999, her writings have been fierce, forceful, and

elegant, essays that have been published in a series of books: The Cost of

Living, Power Politics, and War Talk. The latter two, along with The Checkbook

and the Cruise Missile, a book of conversations with David Barsamian, and now

her newest book, An Ordinary Person's Guide to Empire, have come from

indomitable South End Press, offering both a hellfire view of U.S. government

and corporate policies in the world, and, at the same time, articulate a keen

vision for persisting and ultimately prevailing. Very much with her onstage this

evening is David Barsamian, also a unique and vital presence in publ! ic

discourse. Founder and director of Alternative Radio and its interview programs

(which air here on KUOW), he has a new book of interviews out, Louder Than

Bombs: Interviews from The Progressive Magazine (South End). This book,

following a series of others, includes conversations with a great array of

people, including Eduardo Galeano, Angela Davis, Kurt Vonnegut, Edwidge

Danticat, Howard Zinn, Hanauni-Kay Trask, Noam Chomsky, Eqbal Ahmad, and more.

" In her An Ordinary Person's Guide, Roy's perfect pitch and sharp scalpel are,

once again, a wonder and joy to behold. No less remarkable is the range of

material subjected to her sure and easy touch, and the surprising information

she reveals at every turn. Another outstanding contribution. " - Noam Chomsky.

Advance tickets are $8, and available at Elliott Bay. Town Hall Seattle is

located at 1119 Eighth Avenue, the corner of 8th and Seneca. For more

information on this evening, please call Elliott Bay at 206/624-6600
