Any recommendations where to find it in powdered form at reasonable prices in S.F.? Hmmm... my only experience with agar agar is in cheezecake! As it's expensive in the powdered form, I buy it in Chinatown in the long blocks. I use a food processor to get it into flake form. Perhaps from there you can use a mortar and pestle or something else to get it into a powder form? Anyways, someone asked about vegan jello -- on the packet of the agar agar, there is typically a recipe and it's for " jello " . The cost for 2 long sticks of agar agar is maybe a $1 (or less if you shop around). I've seen them in most Chinese food stores in Chinatown, and also in the Irving / 21st street area.
