Guest guest
Hey all fellow pet owners, Just stumbled today upon a new store near Dolores park (18th and church), specializing in holistic pet foods, and I thought this one is REALLY worth sharing... The owner's philosophy (Jeffrey), is based on a book called " Natural health for dogs and cats " , and he makes his own FRESH food based on the recipes in that book (which he then sells frozen). He also works closely with the author of the book. ALL the meats (and other ingredients) he uses are organic and free range!!! The co-owner is a vegan (I am not sure if he is - forgot to ask him - was too engorssed in the discussion about the food). He says that especially the beef he uses comes from a farm that does its own meat processing, and is supervised by a VEGAN, so is as organic and humane as can be. The philosophy in a nutshell is to give cats and dogs a diet as close to their natural diet as possible. He started making these foods to cure his own cat from lower urinary tract disease (a condition with a very high recurrence rate) using this diet, and it's been 3 years with no recurrence. I happen to know a lot about this condition, since one of my cats has it - and 3 years with no recurrence and NO medication is VERY impressive. His vet then began referring OTHER PEOPLE to him, and that's how he slowly made a business out of this. The store was opened about a month ago. I highly recommend talking to him to all pet owners. The food is not cheap but a lot cheaper than vet bills for illnesses. He also delivers for free. The store is at 3809 18th st (Church and 18th), 415-864-1414. It's really worth a visit. None of that Iams testing on animals and by-products s*$t. They ONLY carry non commercialized brands, and their own fresh food. Plus, you'd be supporting a local business that's really doing it for the love of animals, not the love of money, and that alone is reason enough to go there I think... By the way, the food (called Jeffrey's) is also available at: PuppyCat, 289 Divisadero (415-621-5911) and at Babies, 235 Gough st. (415-701-7387). Cheers.... Guest guest
Ashby, my ten year old dog, and Amy, my 15 year old cat, have been near vegan since they came to live with me, which in both cases is most of their lives. I say " near " vegans because a couple of times a year I find a bird carcass or possum carcass in the yard. Regardless of that, they are happy and healthy examples of companion animals who have lived for many years on plant based diets. In my household there is no meat because it makes no difference to the slaughtered cow who will eat its flesh. If that resonates with you, here's another pet food shop to explore: http://www.petfoodshop.com/home.html (from their homepage) Evolution Diet pet food is a high protein pet food that uses a complex of plant-based amino acids that are superior to those found in animals. Evolution provides all the necessary nutrients including vitamins, trace minerals, proteins and fatty acids found in meat without the diseased matter found in slaughterhouse waste. May all beings be free of suffering, Ron
Guest guest
I¡Çm just now getting around to responding to this posting. I hate to disagree with Tal, but I had a very different experience in that store, which I¡Çd actually meant to share with people. I stumbled upon the store Tal mentioned on a trip to Dolores Park with my dog about a month ago. Inside I noticed some cat toys that felt like they might have been made with real fur (as a lot of cat toys sickeningly are). When I inquired very politely to the owner of the store (I said something like, ¡ÈI know a lot of cat toys are made of real fur-sometimes even dog and cat fur!-and this kind of feels like real fur. Do you know if it is?¡É-he totally jumped down my throat. He said that they *were* real fur and that he didn¡Çt need people like me harassing him about animal rights. ¡ÈYou have no idea how much I care about animals and how much I do for animals, and here you are lecturing me!¡É or something like that, he said heatedly. I turned the other cheek and told him I just wanted to make sure he was aware of the issue and to let him know that I don¡Çt shop at stores that sell real fur and that many other people might be bothered by this as well. He then insisted that I leave the store! I realized in the middle of the conversation that I had a ¡ÈMeat is Murder¡É pin prominently displayed on my bag that I¡Çm almost sure he saw, so that might have struck a chord with him and made him more defensive? In any event, I¡Çm not sure if they¡Çre still selling those toys cuz I¡Çve never been back to check! If you do go to that store, please look for them. Hopefully when he had some time to cool off and think about it, especially if he really does care about animals, he removed them. If they are still selling them, please do say something to him-and be warned that he might not appreciate your feedback! One more thing I have to mention as a dedicated employee of In Defense of Animals: IDA has a campaign to encourage people to use the term ¡Èguardian¡É instead of ¡Èowner¡É as a way of reminding people of our responsibility to animals and to emphasize that they are not mere property, objects, or things, although the law considers them such. In fact, San Francisco, Berkeley, half a dozen other cities, and the state of Rhode Island have all changed their legal ordinances to refer to people either as ¡Èguardians¡É or ¡Èowners/guardians¡É of their animal companions. A great deal of animal exploitation may stem from the root of considering animals our property and us their owners. By referring to ourselves and others as ¡Èguardians,¡É we undercut this mentality. Thanks for everything you¡Çre all doing for the animals! Nora Tal [taltalita] Monday, September 01, 2003 11:31 PM [sfBAVeg] For all pet owners - new store worth visiting!
