Guest guest
Dear BAVeg, I recently joined the list after learning about it while attending Animal Rights 2003 West in Los Angeles (August 2003). I have been caring for feral cats for a couple of years and would like to get connected to those caring for feral cats locally. I am already aware of Alley Cat Allies, but am looking for local groups or individuals who currently care for, or about, the local feral population. I hope to create some type of centralized list of caregivers in the Bay Area, to serve as a community reference, and as a way of communicating to parties who are sympathetic to the plight of abandoned and feral cats, who might be willing to speak up for them through appropriate channels should the need arise. Thanks in advance for your help!! Best regards, Michele Berrong Law Student P. S. I also founded a Student Animal Legal Defense Fund at USF, but am writing as an individual who cares passionately about the feline condition, and not as the founder of that group. Guest guest
Hi Michele, When you say caring for, I hope you also mean trapping and fixing! I am very involved in feral cat rescue, primarily in SF and the Bay Area but have travelled as far as Palm Springs to help locals S/N a Huge colony and set up a workable feral fix program. I primarily do trapping but have socialized a few over the years. Here in SF, in addition to trapping, spaying and neutering feral colonies I find myself, I also hear of many via word of mouth, and I am a Cat Assistance Team (CAT) Volunteer at the SF SPCA, specifically the Feral Fix Program. Check it out: http://www.sfspca.org/feral/index.shtml. The program coordinator, Maryann Buxton is an angel and severly overworked (she handles it with dignity). While I'm writing, I thought I'd also put the word out there that she could really use office help volunteers. The CAT's need so many more volunteers, many of us are dangerously close to burn out. As you probably know, you see those terrified, hungry eyes shimmering in the flashlight beam and you just can't go home yet. The SPCA offers classes on trapping, socializing and feral medical issue from time to time. If anyone is seriously interested in learning how to trap, Please do email me directly or contact Maryann Buxton at the SPCA 415-554-3000. So Michele, call Maryann and she'll hook you up! Kelle PS. I am pleased to report that many of the feral cat volunteers that I have met have 'made the connection' and are veg!
