Duck rescue

Congratulations to Bryan Pease, Kath Rodgers, Carla Brauer and a man who refused

to identify himself for their successful efforts to save some tortured and soon

to be slaughtered ducks from the Sonoma Foie Gras duck shed. This selfless and

courageous act of grace not only saved animal lives but was wisely planned and

executed to avoid property damage thus keeping the spotlight on the animals and

their suffering. By taking responsibility for their acts and cooperating with

the media, they not only guaranteed good press but put a human face on an act of

kindness usually portrayed in the media as " terrorism. " In my opinion, if there

is such a thing as a perfect example of a successful direct action, this act of

animal liberation was it. So three cheers for Bryan, Kath, Carla and their

friend. You go, guys!

Pete,

Here is a superb opportunity for you to demonstrate your law-abiding

animal advocacy. If these direct actions are to have lasting impact, a law

must be passed, at least here in California, banning this kind of duck

farming. This is the time to do it--fresh on the heels of relatively

extensive positive publicity.

So I suggest that you, being as legal-minded as you are, draft a bill for

the California legislature and meet with your representative to request that

he/she sponsor it for you. You can also enlist the help of Virginia Handley

in finding cosponsors. And of course, you should send out press releases and

contact the reporters who did the previous stories to continue the public

awareness campaign.

I'm sure that Viva! and FFA will be happy to distribute leaflets and

postcards to encourage people to support your bill.

You see, there's no need to cheer from the sidelines. Here's a grand

opportunity for you to put that legal expertise to good use.

sincerely,

diana

Hi Diana,

Thanks for your thoughtful suggestions on how I can put my legal expertise to

good use to help the work of the non-violent activists whose recent successful

duck rescue I cheered. However, I've already decided on another option. The

day I heard about the duck rescue I offered my professional legal services on a

pro-bono (no-charge) basis to the possible defendants in an e-mail to Carla. I

hope these four heroes don't face prosecution, but should they need me, I'd be

proud to represent them just as I have so many other animal activists before

them. I hope that meets with your approval.

Best wishes,

Pete
