Guest guest
Hi, I know that last year at about this time there was a lot of discussion on this list about how to humanely coax ants to leave one's abode. I don't have any of those messages any longer, nor do I remember whether anyone ever posted a viable solution. Can somebody please help me out? I have tons of ants right now -- they're infesting my cats' food dishes. Thanks so much for your help! Sandra

Guest guest
There is a wealth of info. on the web about herbal remedies for directing ants elsewhere without kiling them. However, I have seen this work well for friends with cats: sprinkle cinnamon along floor baseboards, in/on cupboards etc., anywhere you see them. It takes a few days for them to get the message but they do move on. Guest guest
Sandra, We had good luck dumping table salt down all the entrances where they were coming into our home, vacuuming the path to the cat food, and then spraying the carpet with diluted dish soap. Guest guest
I read this online so take it as you will and I say this without judging. While the salt method may work, it kills them. Apparently the ants like the taste of salt and will take it home for the family. Once they digest it, they drink until they explode. Not a humane solution after all... Before they are gone, using the suggestions gathered here, try to locate the entry points. When they are gone, caulk the area shut. Guest guest
Kelle, I've just spent the last 10 minutes searching for anything that mentions salt killing ants. All I can find is that it repels them - the opposite of your information. Here's one such example: http://tinyurl.com/okh8 Even the Salt Institute says " drives away " : http://www.saltinstitute.org/backup/29.html Can you cite a source for this information? I'm not doubting you, I just don't want to switch to another system when this one is working so well (and inexpensively). I only found this one reference, and it's not a reputable informative source - just a collection of tips people have written in, and even this poster says she's not sure that's what it was, just that it worked to keep ants away: http://www.thefrugallife.com/ants1.html -Kim On Wed, 24 Sep 2003, Kelle K wrote: > I read this online so take it as you will and I say this without judging.
