Guest guest
Dear Friends of Animals, I am forwarding the message below from a friend of a friend. If you're interested in adopting Tinka, please do contact me, but contact Andrea at (510) 530-2479 or email andrealjason You can see a picture of Tinka at http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~boaa/tinka.html Thanks! Julie Tinka is a beautiful, graceful, eleven-year old calico cat with much love to give. She is gentle, playful, social and enjoys giving and getting lots of attention. She will work well with someone who is at home a lot of the time as she does not like to be left alone. She does not like dogs but gets along fine with children. Although I am reluctant to give Tinka away, our new and wonderful at-home babysitter is allergic to cats and would therefore be unable to care for our daughter. Finally, one important thing you should know about Tinka is that she has the bad habit of pooping outside her litter box. Perhaps someone skilled in training cats would be the perfect match. If you are interested in adopting Tinka please contact Andrea at (510) 530-2479 or email andrealjason

I have to say that I have a lot of judgements about this. Andrea says that Tinka Cat is 11 years old. If Andrea has had Tinka for most of those 11 years (or even if not) I think it is very sad that she would get rid of her because the babysitter is allergic. I know it is hard to find a new babysitter, but I am sure there must be a non-allergic babysitter out there somewhere. I am always disappointed at how disposable people think cats and dogs are. I think many of us who are vegetarian and vegan would think that another vegetarian or vegan would have a higher standard of care/consideration for their animals (perhaps thinking that someone who chooses not to eat animals would also have more respect for other animals in their lives). And we'd probably assume that most people posting to this list are vegetarians or vegans, or moving in that direction. In this case, Julie posted the note for her friend of a friend (Andrea) to SFBAVEG. So, perhaps this friend is not (yet) veg thus her consideration of the cat is not the same as ours. After seeing The Food Revolution on my bookshelf for a couple of years, I am finally reading it on my morning commute via bus. John Robbins talks about the horrendous conditions that animals in factory farms live and die under. With this so fresh in mind, I am not at all surprised that someone would find a cat disposeable. I guess I am just feeling cynical... Reading The Food Revolution is a good reminder to me of why I chose to stop eating animals. Guest guest
Hello all, Just wanted to thank Tammy for correctly identifying the situation I found myself in. I actually posted the message for someone I don't very well (perhaps 'acquaintance' would've been a more appropriate word to use) who asked me to do so for her friend (Andrea). Anyway, I've received a few private emails expressing very legitimate concerns about this family giving away this elderly companion animal, so to clarify for everyone else on the list who may feel similiarly: I wholeheartedly agree that the family should find a way to continue caring for Tinka. But I also sensed that just wouldn't happen. So I posted the notice on the list because I *didn't want Tinka to end up in a shelter and risk the possibility of being euthanized.* If you can provide a loving home for Tinka or know anyone else who can, she'd appreciate it!
