464-8th Street, Downtown Oakland.510-444-2891 Invitation to those who have

enjoyed Bode, (early 90's) and then New World Vegetarian Restaurant in the past,

as well as those who would like to try it for the first time. New World

re-opened after extensive kitchen and interior remodeling, with lovely dark

cherrywood-appearing tables and refinished floors, and a kitchen at least twice

as large as before.New World's mock " meats " are made with vegan ingredients.

Vegan desserts now offered.Sharing dishes as a group encouraged and appreciated,

Eastern. Macrobiotic. Menu: Has over 100 dishes on the menu. Mock Barbecue Pork,

Vegetarian Eel, Veggie Patties and tofu dishes. The menu changes seasonally.

Okra Red Bean, Chicken Cacciatore, Mushroom Basil, Indian Dharma, Tofu Stew,

Teriyaki Beef, Tri Bean Stew, Spinach veggie Tuna Salad, Tabbouleh Masala,

Brazilian Eggplant Salad, a variety of soups (Seaweed Tofu, Wonton, Vegetable

Bean Mexicana), Black Pepper Steak, Chicken Parmigiana, Chicken Burrito and much

more. The Eternal Life and Peace, claypot dishes.Comments: The staff is very

veg-educated and friendly. The entrées are mostly Vietnamese and Thai. New World

was formerly named Bode Vegetarian Restaurant. Food gets high recommendations.

Pleasant atmosphere. Reasonable prices. Their saying, " All vegetarian with

respect for life. " Got the 1999 Readers Choice Award of the Oakland Tribune for

Best Vegetarian Restaurant. Makes mock meat dishes with soy products and wheat

gluten. Food is well presented. Food prepared with homemade sauces that use sea

salt, are free of MSG, and are low in oil.Other Info: Full service, take-out,

catering. Reservations recommended. Non-smoking. Accepts AMEX, DC, MC,

VISA.Directions: Located in downtown Oakland between Broadway and Washington, a

few blocks north of I-880. From I-880 N, take the Broadway exit towards

downtown, then go north on Broadway and this place 2 blocks down. Conveniently

located parking lot next to restaurant. Can be easily reached by public
