Guest guest
Hey folks, Some of you may have seen the posts previously about the " Adopt a College " / " National Leaflet Your Local School Day " sponsored by VIVA, Vegan Outreach, and Animal Rights International. I was interested because it focused on how receptive students/younger adults are towards the veg message versus the general population. I was intrigued by the projected calculations of new vegetarians converted by this message ( see: http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges/ ) I wanted to share my experience in case there are others out there interested in trying leaf-letting but perhaps haven't done it before. Not wanting to leaflet on my own, I joined up with a friend and on our lunch hour we walked over to the Academy of Art campus in SF. The Academy of Art college has several buildings within SF, so there isn't really one centralized campus but more like a few buildings here and there. But as we really only had our lunch hour, this was the closest student population. Within 25 minutes, we'd distributed over 70 " Why Vegans " and also had 4 people self-identify themselves as vegan and one as a vegetarian (and one person is on this list!! Hi!) I think this was a great project by VIVA, Vegan Outreach, and Animal Rights International. Thanks to their efforts, I was actually inspired to do something that I normally wouldn't. I was impressed at how easily the Why Vegans went and also at the number of folks who commented they were already veg. Do you want to know what the most difficult part was? Carrying the leaflets the 2 blocks from the bus stop to my office! Overall, this has to be one of the easiest places I've ever done leaf-letting and one of the most productive lunch hours I've had. So, I thought it went well and it's something that I'll try doing again. I'm already thinking that veg Thanksgiving recipes might be a timely option... Cheers, Tammy Bay Area Vegetarians.... Guest guest
Hey there everyone! I just wanted to second what Tammy said about the Adopt a College program. I adopted / leafleted UC Santa Cruz (where I am living now), and had a great experience. Myself and one other person leafleted outside of the bookstore on campus, and gave out about 200 booklets in an hour. We both agreed that it was one of the most positive leafleting experiences we've ever had -- almost everyone was receptive and we had some great conversations with people, a few of whom want to get involved with Freedom for Animals now. The most common reason for people rejecting my brochures was because they were already vegetarian or vegan! Afterwards, I went to eat at the cafe across from the bookstore, and there was a Why Vegan on almost everyone's table. This is definitely something we are planning to do again (next Thursday, actually!). - Carla Brauer www.freedom4animals.org
Guest guest
Tammy, Thanks a lot for making this great post about National Leafleting Day and Adopt a College (AAC)! Between, you, FFA, East Bay Animal Advocates and others, the Bay Area is now the most active area of the country for the AAC. Chicago is a close second thanks to Joe Espinosa and Marsha Forsman. But, there are still tons of Bay Area colleges not adopted - people waiting to be vegetarian if someone would just go out and give them some good information! So, other people on the list should not be bashful about checking out the site and signing up. And if you know potential leafleters in other parts of the country, please pass this on to them. I just updated the totals and we are now (theoretically, of course) saving over 8,000 animals a year. http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges Jack Norris, Vegan Outreach - " Tammy " <govegan " BAV mail list " Tuesday, October 14, 2003 8:16 PM [sfBAVeg] feedback on " Adopt a College " /Leaflet your school day > Hey folks, > > Some of you may have seen the posts previously about the " Adopt a > College " / " National Leaflet Your Local School Day " sponsored by VIVA, Vegan > Outreach, and Animal Rights International. Guest guest
Hello. I was wondering if it's possible to hand out mini vegan cookies from Sun Flour Baking Company while handing out leaflets if it's not a hassle? Let me know, if anything maybe we can select a few random schools and do it occasionally. I would be more then happy to provide them at no charge and pay for shipping with a 2 week lead time. 320 com in a 12x12x12 box that weighs 20 lbs. Is the Bay Area so veg-friendly because of the activists, or are there more activists because the Bay Area is so veg friendly? > But, there are still tons of Bay Area colleges not adopted - people waiting > to be vegetarian if someone would just go out and give them some good > information! So, other people on the list should not be bashful about > checking out the site and signing up. It is very easy to order literature from Vegan Outreach and other groups. And if anyone is really excited about doing this locally and can't wait to get literature in the mail, we can try to figure out a way to get some literature to you more quickly. Or if you want a buddy to join you, I would encourage you to post looking for one! Also, I want to underscore how long it really took to do this -- we were able to do the whole leafletting event in an hour! That includes walking several blocks to the college, leafletting, and returning to work.... So for folks who work in urban areas with students nearby, it is a practical lunch hour activity. And, if you like statistics, it was nearly 3 Why Vegans per minute, and we weren't even at a traditional campus, just outside a school building on the street... > I just updated the totals and we are now (theoretically, of course) saving > over 8,000 animals a year. > http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges Carla, thanks for sharing your leafletting experience! If anyone else participated in " Adopt a College " or Leaflet your school day, let us know how your experience was or if you have any tips to help others get started.
