I would appreciate any advice on book titles. I am experiencing a few problems

with one of the directors at my childs school. He actually had the nerve to

print out some info off the internet on amino acids, and how most people got

their protein from animal sources, and asked my son what he ate for breakfast,

lunch and dinner! (He knows we are a vegetarian family, and my son was sick

yesterday.) I am a little irate, but I do want to buy this guy a book with some

scholarly info, but at the same time very readable. I was thinking of John

Robbins, but I am open to suggestions. Thanks so much, Tracy

You could do the same for him, just print some stuff off the internet

and shove it in his mailbox. Don't spend money on this bozo.

Perhaps it would be nice if you thanked the director for taking an interest

in your son's well-being and then ask what his last illness was and whether

it was related to salmonella poisoning, ask him if he's had his cholesterol

level checked recently, or if he understands the relationship between a

meat-based diet and environmental destruction and world hunger... according

to The Food Revolution by John Robbins, a child dies of hunger-caused

disease every two seconds (page 289). (Sorry for the mini rant.... I'm

still working my way through the book and some of these facts read like

they're from Ripley's Believe It or Not!)

I think The Food Revolution is a great book but if you want to convince

someone of the health benefits of a veg diet, I think the " M.D " after

someone's name adds an extra boost to credibility. When I think of children

and vegetarianism, I think of Dr. Benjamin Spock.. I haven't read any of his

books, but I do know he advocated a veg diet. Alternatively, Doctors

McDougall and Ornish are also well-known, especially here in the Bay Area.

Supporting Tony's thoughts of not wasting any money, the American Dietetic

Association has a position paper supporting vegetarianism.

If your son's school has a lunch program, perhaps this is an opportunity for

you to discuss vegetarian options in school lunches. To that end, there was

a book produced by EarthSave called " Healthy School Lunch Action Guide " .

Finally, did you know that PETA offers school libraries free subscriptions

to either of their magazines " Animal Times " or " Grrr! " ?? The latter is a

magazine for kids. Contact PETA's Education Department at 757-622-7382 with

your request.

Good luck!!

Cheers,

Tammy
