Guest guest
Hi All- For some time now, I've heard that Dr. John McDougall recommends Taco Bell for a fast-food vegan meal, being that you can get a bean & rice burrito. It seemed a " given " that this was a sure vegan fast-food option. Just yesterday a vegan friend told me that she was told by someone (are you following this?) that Taco Bell puts cheese in their beans. She has taken this " fact " as a given for some time, as does her circle of vegan friends. I thought I'd put this out to this list to stir things, er....... the beans...... up a bit..........Does anyone know what the truth is? I know BOTH can't be true! Guest guest
Good question... Both DelTaco and TacoBell beans are vegan (don't have cheese put ON the burrito). In other states, you may find TacoTime. They also claim to have vegan beans. My foot work... I just called 800-Taco-Bell. Ask to have cheese off of the burrito. They do use oil (not lard) so they aren't perfect McDougall. Beans are 2.5 fat, 370mg sodium. Go to their web site for more details. They don't list ingredients, so beware. I'd skip flour tortillas just out of concern of all the " additives " they use to keep them fresh. If you live by a HighTech Burrito... they have whole beans that are vegan, corn tortillas, and water sautéed veggies. Better healthier choice. I'll call TacoTime and DellTaco when they open to grill them on the vegan Qs... until then... beans R us! - chuck On Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at 08:46 PM, Marcy Greenhut wrote: > Hi All- > > For some time now, I've heard that Dr. John McDougall recommends Taco > Bell > for a fast-food vegan meal, being that you can get a bean & rice > burrito. > It seemed a " given " that this was a sure vegan fast-food option. > > Just yesterday a vegan friend told me that she was told by someone > (are you > following this?) that Taco Bell puts cheese in their beans. Guest guest
I always heard that Taco Bell bean burritos sans the cheese was vegan, too. I only eat them maybe once every 3-5 years when desperate on road trips, but I was under the understanding that they were vegan from PETA (I got a pamphlet once a long time ago). The description of this book says that they are vegan: http://www.vrg.org/catalog/ff.htm Bean Burritos (no cheese) are still PETA approved and so are some other Taco Bell items I wasn't aware could be made vegan: http://www.peta2.com/stuff/s-eat2.html http://www.vegkids.com/vegkids/wte.html Hope this helps. Guest guest
Even if Taco Bell beans are vegan, there are good reasons for not eating them or anything else at Taco Bell. First, Taco Bell sponsors mushers in the barbaric Iditarod (see http://www.helpsleddogs.org). Second, Taco Bell is owned by Yum Brands, the same company that owns KFC. KFC has refused to take the necessary steps to eliminate its suppliers' most severe cruelty to chickens.
