Guest guest
Action Alert: Valley Fair Mall I was in the Valley Fair Mall today and I saw a kiosk titled " Krabby World " with a bunch of crabs and turtles for sale. The tank of baby turtles was at floor level with the lid off and a small crowd of children was playing with them. I asked the man working there what kind of turtles they were and he said " red eared sliders " a type of turtle that is cheap, often costing less than 7$, but very expensive and time consuming to take care of. I asked him if he had any information on how to take care of them and he said " no, not for the turtles. " When I asked him what his instructions were for taking care of them he said " Keep them in this pot. (pointing to a pot little smaller than a dinner plate) and change their water every other day. " He said this in a tone directed at calming my worries and trying to secure a sale. Red Eared Sliders actually require MUCH more equipment and care. I think a 20 gal tank for one turtle, with heaters, a filter and a `basking spot' is approaching proper care. At this point all those turtles are doomed to death and disease due to negligence. Even if someone who bought a 7$ turtle from this shop was willing to buy the 200$ in accessories to take proper care of it, they would never even know they had to thanks to " Mr. Salesmen " . I was so mad I just left. At this point I don't really know what to do. I cringe at the though of 30 baby turtles going home today to live in their unheated clay pot until shell rot or hypothermia overtake them. If you feel like contacting Valley Fair Mall here's a way to contact them. http://www.westfield.com/us/centres/california/valleyfair/service/? centre_id=valleyfair If any of you are interested in an organized effort feel free to contact me. Guest guest
Well the drama continues. Apparently the mall is claiming the shop doesn't exist and the shop that was there never sold turtles when people call to complain. So I returned to the Krabby World kiosk today at the Valley Fair mall and sure enough all the turtles were there. The kiosk is right in front of lady's footlocker. When I arrived the man who worked their was complaining to a customer about how children had been steeling them (maybe because they're at floor level?) I asked again about materials to care for them and information about their care and basically all he had were these clay pots and he was very open about his lack of knowledge on their care. I explained to him how much care and equipment they required in order to be healthy. I also took a measurement of the largest turtle I could find and at the longest point in it's shell it measured 1 & 4/10ths of an inch. (see email below) At this point I would encourage all of you to call valley fair mall and express your outrage at the illegal animal sales and encourage them to surrender the turtles to a reptile rescue group. As well as agree to never sell any red eared sliders without including the necessary equipment and information to keep them healthy. > Here is a some interesting info that I thought I would share (the > tirtles were deffinatly less than 4 inches): > > For your information, selling small turtles with a carapace ofless > than four inches is against federal law. Guest guest
Thank you to everyone who offered support, ideas, and took action. Yesterday I was contacted by Officer Morris of the silicon valley animal control and she said that she had contacted the shop and that they would no longer be selling the baby turtles. Apparently they were given the option of surrendering the turtles but preferred to sell them back to their vendor (gurrr) Also, apparently they still have the turtles out where the kids can play with them, they're just no longer for sale (gurrr) I do think some progress was made though and I am grateful for you help. sobaysean

Guest guest
Turtle Update: Lodge your complaint on the idiocy (ok say it nice) of the "Specialty Leasing Manager"'s decision to let this vendor in the door (oh, and take the profits) with the General Manager and insist that all fees collected from this Turtle vendor be contributed to the Santa Clara SPCA (and copy the SPCA in your letter). The general manager's name is: Phillip St. Pierre General Manager Valley Fair Mall 2855 Steven's Creek Boulevard Santa Clara, CA 95050 The specialty leasing manager who aided and abetted and profited from this illegal and inhumane practice is Susan Neideffer and I am writing a letter to specifically complain about the lack of judgement and oversight when it comes to known illegal activities. For example, Susan wouldn't permit someone to sell hash or marijuana in the mall, would she? Why would she not take the time or trouble to find out what laws surround animal sales? It is illegal to sell certain animal pelts in this country, the question is, why aren't their employees provided a simple list of what is illegal to sell? Best, Julie Julie A.
