Taurine Deficiency In Vegans?

Dear Folks,

I recently heard the claim that vegans

should add fish to their eating regimen,

since the amino acid taurine is lacking

in a vegan diet.

I'm interested in any thoughts on this

putative problem. Thanks.

Best, Michael

Taurine is not one of the " essential " amino acids - we can synthesize

it ourselves from other nutrients. Besides, if we really needed some,

we could just drink a Red Bull Energy Drink every day instead of eating

fish... ;-)

FYI, cats cannot synthesize taurine, and thus it is necessary for them

to receive through their diets.

Hi,

Per GNC website:

Who is likely to be deficient? Most people, including vegans (vegetarians who eat no dairy or eggs) do not need taurine supplements. While infants require taurine, the amount in either human milk or formula is adequate. People with diabetes have been reported to have lower blood levels of taurine than non-diabetics.1

This is because taurine is manufactured by your own body from other food sources.
