"What's the best place to show off yum vegan food in Berkeley on a Saturday at lunchtime?"

This isn't a restaurant, but the Mexican tamales by Mi Flacos available (some) Saturdays at Berkeley Farmer's Market are wonderful! Maybe there is a way you can find out whether they will be there this weekend... The Ecology Center (which runs the market) can probably give you contact info...

If you are a pizza fan, Lanesplitter's Pub has a few vegan items on their menu, including vegan calzones and pizza (available with tofu ricotta)....

Also worth a visit is Mondo Gelato's.. they have one case full of vegan ice creams (both soy and sorbets)

Cheers,

Tammy

As simple and quick option is High Tech burrito. They do a great tofu

taco or burrito w/ Black or Pinto beans. The nice part about the tofu

is they cook it in it's own pan, so you don't have meat on the same

grill issues. The only down side is the seating is limited.

You've also get a number of Ethiopian place in town to choose from.

I must vehemently disagree with Chuck on this one. I find the High Tech

tofu Burrito to be the worst burrito available in the world today. I

have tried it twice and actually got sick from the last one.

If you want to get great vegan Mexican food in Berkeley (albeit SW

Berkeley) try Picante Cocina Mexicana. They have a separate vegetarian

menu and specifically call out what is vegan and what can be made vegan.

Regardless of cuisine type, I would choose Udupi Palace (Vegetarian

Southern Indian) for an awesome lunch in Berkeley. You can view their

menu here: http://tinyurl.com/2bpcg

josh,

Not to start a fire storm here about food, but the web site didn't

address my top six needs for " good burritos "

- fat-free beans

- water saute in separate pans for the veggies

- vegan non-fat wheat tortillas

- brown rice

- low sodium

- organic is a plus

I'm always happy to try any good burrito place, as long as their doing

it McDougall style like Sonoma Taco in the North Bay, or Slice of Life

in Sebastopol.

thanks for the great tips on vegan dinning in Berkely... I know the

options are tough out there. Especially for those few of us doing a

Vegan McDougall thing.

Cha-Ya is open for lunch. I believe the hours are 12-2pm but call

510-981-1213 to confirm.

I strongly recommend Razan's Organic Kitchen @ 2119 Kittredge St / Berkeley, CA

94704 / 510-486-0449 / Hours are 10-10 every day / b/w Shattuck and Oxford. They

are locally owned, they are almost entirely organic and have TONS of veggie and

vegan options from Mexican to Meditterean. You can even request that they cook

your veggies for your burrito in a separate pan to get away from the grill.

Two other possibilities not yet mentioned:

(1) Long Life Vegi House, located at the corner of

Shattuck and University, on University. Inexpensively

priced vegetarian Chinese fare. Pros: brown rice

available, inexpensive, fast. Cons: somewhat on the

greasy side, hot and sour soup contains egg whites -

but many dishes may be ordered vegan.

(2) Thai Delight, located at the corner of Virgnia and

Shattuck, on Shattuck. Just down the street from

Cha-Ya. Pros: Separate organic menu with about six to

seven vegan options; see also several vegan appetizer

options. Brown rice available. Food is generally quite

good. Almost never crowded. Cons: Service can be slow

and erratic, though the last few times I've gone (at

dinner time) the service seems to have picked up.
