Guest guest
Hey all, I just had dinner at Geranium, and the food was really amazing. The barbecue seitan with okra, mashed potatoes, and grilled corn and the meatless loaf with collard greens and potatoes. Both were mmmm goood. Entrees ranged from about 10 dollars to about 14 dollars. The restaurant itself looks very nice. There is a bar, fresh flowers everywhere, and the decor is beautiful. Guest guest
that is great news! i went by before their opening to pick up a menu, and i'm really excited to try it out. my only concern was that the number of vegan dishes was fairly small. did you feel that vegans had enough choices there? and were the staff able to veganize dishes that contain cheese? When I called Geranium, I asked how much of the menu was vegan and I was told half. I asked if the vegan items were marked on the menu. I was told no, but the wait staff is familiar with the dishes and which ones are vegan or could be made vegan. My concern with the latter is that it puts a big responsibility on the wait staff to really know the difference. Whereas if it's marked on the menu, it's easy for everyone to see. For those who have been in the bay area awhile, this was reason why I only went to Michael's diner a few times (a now defunct vegetarian restaurant formerly in Berkeley) .. something would be vegan one day, but not vegan the next day. I know this is only an issue for vegans, but vegans do tend to be a noisier crowd than the vegetarians :-) Hopefully this won't be the issue at Geranium; I'm looking forward to trying it out this weekend. Their proximity to Maggie Mudd's is a big plus, too. I think it's great when people post reviews to the list. But adding them to the Ultimate Guide (where you can rate/rank on a scale of 1 to 5) will insure they're long-term usefulness (i.e. it'll be right there when people look at the restaurant listing). And, of course, please do keep adding the veggie restaurants. There are almost 200 listings in UG now but there are still several veggie restaurants missing. http://www.BayAreaVeg.org/ug Lisa, thanks for posting the review to the list! Guest guest
Yeah, I completely understand your concern. I ate at Stoa the other day, and we were a bit apprehensive about whether our food contained butter, even though we requested it to be made vegan. At Geranium, there are about 3 entrees that are always made vegan, so you don't have to worry about those. There are at least three desserts that are completely vegan. I'm not sure about the appetizers, but I know that the french onion soup can be made vegan by replacing the cheese with soy cheese. The owner said that the menu is still being changed and tweeked. I think vegans should definitely try it and should feel confident that their food does not contain dairy or egg, especially if they order something that is always made vegan. I felt like I could trust that my food was vegan, no doubts. I do however think that they should put more emphasis on making most, if not all of the food vegan. I could see how they could make a vegan version of just about everything on the menu.
