DID YOU KNOW?The new numbers are out and they're larger than last year: Globally, slaughter of animals for food increased to more than 50 BILLION individuals in 2003, not including any types of aquatic animals. Chickens accounted for 93% (46 billion) of animals killed. Not considering birds, the slaughter of pigs was highest with more than 1.2 billion, followed by more than 850 million rabbits.THE GOOD NEWS? We are healthiest - and the animals are happiest - whenever we eat plant-based meals! With every meal, you really do make a difference!Yummy Veggie Recipes!http://compassionatecooks.c.topica.com/maacF69abadaiaaaaaabaeQx73/

EARTHLIGHT MAGAZINE INTERVIEWS COMPASSIONATE COOKS

Following their "food issue" that didn't address vegetarianism and the suffering of animals, EarthLight Magazine responded to reader mail and dedicated a good portion of their Autumn 2004 issue to people working on behalf of 'compassionate vegetarianism.'

Assistant Editor Sharon Abercrombie reveals some of her conversation with Colleen Patrick-Goudreau in her Essay "Toward the Great Compassion: Expanding the Circle," which precedes Colleen's Essay "I Am My Brother's Keeper." Other contributors include Howard Lyman and John Robbins. To purchase a copy, order directly through the magazine, or if you're local, pick up a copy at Cody's Books in Berkeley or Pendragon Books on College Ave. in Oakland.

I encourage you to send a letter to the editors (K. Lauren de Boer klauren and Sharon Abercrombie SAbercrombie) thanking them for addressing this very important issue.
