Guest guest
I'd like to find a hair salon/hairdresser/haircut place that only uses vegan products. I searched on the Ultimate Guide and did not see anything similar anywhere in the bay area. For a good place that will only be using cruelty-free products, I would make a special trip nearly anywhere within the BA. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, if you know of a place, in addition to replying to me and/or the list, please also include it in the Ultimate Guide. Thanks, Angela
Guest guest
Topps Salon in Oakland uses Pureology - a company that says "vegan" on the bottles of their hair products - no animal testing and no animal products. http://www.toppsdayspasalon.com/. The owner very intentionally chose them and was very excited when they changed to this product line. As far as hair color, highlights, etc., you'd have to ask them about that. It's vegetarian (but not vegan) owned. Suzanne van Houten is the owner and a friend. You can say I recommended them. Guest guest
Aveda is a vegan company that is very environmentally connected. I'm not sure about their hair coloring though. they have many salons in the bay area. Judy On Thursday, September 23, 2004, at 11:38 AM, Colleen A. Guest guest
Aveda is not actually a vegan company, though a number of their products might be. Many of their products contain honey and beeswax and milk and probably other stuff I'm not remembering. It's certainly better than most producers of so-called salon quality products, but, if vegan is what you're looking for, Aveda's not where it's at. Guest guest
Wow, this vegan-beauty stuff is tough. As I too am looking for a cruelty-free colorist, I looked into some of the recommendations re vegan hair care options and thought I would report back to the front re my findings: As for Aveda, it is true they are not entirely vegan. However, most of their hair care products, according to the customer care person I spoke with, are in fact vegan. There are three hair care products that are not vegan, in that they use any or all of the following: honey, beeswax, lanolin. Those three are: Foamalant (sp?) (why they just don't call it foam I don't know, but you remember it from the 80's, yes??); 2) Sap Moss Nourishing Concentrate (some sort of conditioning product); and 3) Lite-element Mist Wax (voluminizing -- is that a word?? -- product for thin hair). According to Aveda, other than these three products all of the Aveda hair care products, including color, are both free from animal testing and animal products. HOWEVER, based on the fact that it took me 10 ways of asking and a heck of a long time to pin her down -- her first response was -- yes, we are totally vegan -- oh, honey, well, they are free range bees -- does that count -- ha ha ha ha ha -- OKAY?! – I recommend double checking any specific product choice with their customer care department. You can find that number and a store/salon location finder at their website: www.aveda.com. As for Topsalon Day Spa: I called to see if their color products we're also " vegan " . At first someone called back and left a message saying they were free from animal testing, but honey based. When I called back, I got someone name Michael who said they were totally free of animal products. THAT SAID, the color products they use are apparently SoColor and ColorSync, both made by Matrix. I went online to find product info for Matrix and their website had no discussion re animal testing or products whatsoever, and frankly, felt pretty regular commercial hair care product to me. So for coloring, I would proceed here with caution. ljc , Sandra Lupien <sandrallupien> wrote: > Aveda is not actually a vegan company, though a number > of their products might be. Guest guest
For unnatural " vegetable " hair dye colors - my preference - Special Effects hair dye (http://www.amphigory.com/special_effects_hairdye.html) is vegan and sold at online vegan outlets like Vegan Essentials. If you want a vegan hair dye that is 100% natural (and more natural looking), you can try one of the many plant based hennas. And here's a site that lists PETA's animal-friendly/vegan products: http://www.operation-glam.com/diva/mapuppy.html or see the same list in PDF http://www.caringconsumer.com/page/CompaniesDont.pdf Kasie
