This is from Aveda CS... they answered my e-mail fairly quickly, so

if you have any questions about products I would suggest writing to

Aveda was purchased several years ago by Estee Lauder. At that time Estee Lauder agreed to begin a moratorium on (i.e., temporary -- not permanent -- end to) animal testing. I don't know if Estee Lauder implemented the moratorium or, if so, if it's still in place. I've noticed that Aveda products say "This product tested on people," not "not tested on animals," which makes me suspicious, because they could be tested on both, and/or the ingredients could be tested on animals even if the final product is not. Estee Lauder products don't say at all. Regardless, although I haven't researched Estee Lauder, I know (from reading their labels) that they use whey in some products -- so I'd guess that means factory-farmed cows. Even though Aveda started with a different concept from the big cosmetic manufacturers, now that it's been purchased by Estee Lauder, I'd rather spend my money elsewhere. One might take the

position, however, that supporting Aveda ( & Origins) helps ensure that companies like Estee Lauder know that the public considers Aveda at least a step in the right direction.... -- Thea
