Guest guest
Hi all, I had a real shock today when I walked past the clothing store Bebe on Grant by Market in downtown SF. Of about six mannequins in the window, five of them -- yes five! -- were dressed in fur. Of course, I'd noticed that stores and magazines are trying to bring fur back into fashion. And, to be honest, I've been more concerned lately with the plight of farm (food production) animals. But it dawned on me for the first time today how important it is that we put a stop to this "fashion choice" before it takes hold. We shouldn't wait to act until the fashion-conscious have already bought the fur coats, wraps, collars, etc., that are in stores today. I want to remind shoppers now that fur means an animal has suffered and that there will be people speaking up and pointing out what a horrible choice fur as fashion is. I've never planned any kind of protest before, so I'd love it if someone would get in touch about planning some things (or let me know if there are already fur protests going on that I'm unaware of). Either way, I'll post some dates/locations soon! Thanks! There was an article just last week talking about fur being a growing trend in the Bay Area. Anita from IDA was quoted, and mentioned her regular protests regarding fur. Here is the link to the story from the San Mateo County Times: http://www.sanmateocountytimes.com/Stories/0,1413,87%257E2494%257E2421209,00.html Bebe is one of the companies we "featured" at recent BAV letter writing parties ... If I recall correctly, their headquarters are in the Bay Area, too. Tammy Bay Area Vegetarianswww.BayAreaVeg.org
Guest guest
Hey there, Fur has definitely grown in popularity - especially fur trim - in recent years. There are some 40 million fur-bearing animals who are gassed, trapped, and even anally or vaginally electrocuted to make these products. I honestly think that no one would be willing to buy fur products if they *really* understood the processes used to create them, which is why it is SO incredibly important to educate shoppers about this issue and get them to not only stop buying fur, but to actively ask fur-selling stores to stop selling it. There are weekly anti-fur demonstrations in front of Neiman " Carcass " (ok, Marcus) at the corner of Stockton & Geary St. in San Francisco every Sunday from 2 - 4pm rain or shine. We set up a display, hold signs, and pass out leaflets that the Fund for Animals prints for us. I've been going almost every weekend for the past 4ish years, and i've seen many people change their minds about fur and be shocked to find out how it's produced. Please come and join us - we can really use more people helping out, and we always have extra signs & leaflets. To find out more, visit www.freedom4animals.org/neimancarcass Thanks! Hope to see you out there! - Carla Brauer On Wednesday, September 29, 2004, at 11:07 PM, Thea Langsam wrote: > Hi all, > > I had a real shock today when I walked past the clothing store Bebe on > Grant by Market in downtown SF.
