Guest guest
Hey all, My friend and I went to Golden Era last night, 12/16/04. We had " drumsticks, " " caramelized chicken, " and " curry vegetables. " Coincidentally, both of us woke up (in different cities) at 4 am with horrible stomach cramps. I have a gut feeling it was the drumsticks which are a current special there. I would recommend everyone avoid that dish for now. I'm also calling restaurant, but just wanted you all to know. I thought we vegetarians weren't supposed to get food poisining. This sucks! (Although, I did take a group to Garden Fresh about 3 years ago and they all got sick afterwards). I'm not trying to condemn or sound alarms - just thought everyone should know... -- Version: 7.0.296 / Virus Database: 265.5.4 - Release 12/15/2004
Guest guest
Wow, Clyde, thank you for posting this; I was there night before last with a friend and we almost ordered the drumsticks. Now I'm glad we didn't! Guest guest
Hi Clyde, I'm sorry you and your friend had to go through this unpleasant experience. I've been through that -- yes, even as a vegan. However, when you call it what it really is, food contamination, you see that even veg*ns are susceptible to this. Unless it's animal-free from seed to feed, no food is safe unless you take common sense precautions like washing the foods, sanitary food prep (wash hands, keep animal and plant foods and utensils separate, etc), and cooking things that should be cooked (like...gasp...meat. yuck!) The fact that we're more susceptible to food-bourne illness may be a compelling argument itself for veg*nism but that's a can of non-gelatinous gummy worms I'd rather not open here. While frustrating and uncomfortable, I wouldn't consider a single incident (and I consider you and your friend to be the same incident) a reason for alarm or a general boycott of the dish or the restaurant. Other reports of food poisoning there, past or future, would be more telling of the kitchen/food conditions than a single dish on a single night. You did the right thing in calling the restaurant, though. At very least, we can hope the kitchen staff will get a reminder about sanitary food prep. Feel better! ~Matthew , Clyde <r@g...> wrote: > Hey all, > > My friend and I went to Golden Era last night, 12/16/04. > > We had " drumsticks, " " caramelized chicken, " and " curry vegetables. Guest guest
Hi Clyde Sorry to hear about your bad experience. I've only had food poisoning once and it's wasn't very pleasant to say the least. Hopefully this is an isolate incident for Golden Era. Our food goes thru so many hands, directly and indirectly, so you never know where the original problem started. However, you should report this to the restaurant at a minimum just in case they've had other reports and need to track an issue. Even the best places are susceptible to problems like this, e.g. there was a report on the list of food poisoning at Millenniums a while ago. And to repeat a very helpful link someone posted last week to look up places with food violations in San Francisco http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/eh/Violations/Loc_Search.asp A quick search on Golden Era shows that they have no recent violations and were last inspected about a year ago. http://www.dph.sf.ca.us/eh/Violations/Loc_CurrentViol.asp?LocationID=2480 Take care Chris Clyde [r] Friday, December 17, 2004 11:14 AMVegGroups: Golden Era Food Poisoning Experience Hey all,My friend and I went to Golden Era last night, 12/16/04.We had "drumsticks, caramelized chicken," and "curry vegetables."Coincidentally, both of us woke up (in different cities) at 4 am with horrible stomach cramps.I have a gut feeling it was the drumsticks which are a current special there. Guest guest
Hi: Something to be aware of is that veg*ns are just as susceptible to food-borne illness cause by HUMAN lack of proper sanitation methods as anyone else. I had a friend who went to the hospital with food poisoning and the ER Doctor told her that he was very wary of eating salsa and garden salads in restaurants!! Because the vegetables are handled by human hands, that may not have been properly washed, and then are not cooked. So, the point abut reporting it to the restaurant and making sure they get on their restaurant staff about proper sanitation techniques is a good one. I continue to eat salsa and salads, but I have to admit with more trepidation than I did before. I know it's icky to think about, but there it is.
