Hi Rosalind, and others,

Depending on your religious background and spiritual traditions, I would

recommend " ANIMAL RITES:

Liturgies of Animal Care " by CVA board member Andrew Linzey, an Oxford

theologian and Anglican

priest:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0829814515/qid=1106932283/sr=8-2/r\

Related works listed on the Amazon.com website currently include:

* Animal Gospel by Andrew Linzey

* Animal Theology by Andrew Linzey

* The Slaughter of Terrified Beasts: A Biblical Basis for the Humane

Treatment of Animals by

J.R. Hyland

* On God and Dogs: A Christian Theology of Compassion for Animals by Stephen

H. Webb

* Animal Blessings: Prayers and Poems Celebrating Our Pets by June Cotner

* There is Eternal Life for Animals by Niki Behrikis Shanahan

(I particularly recommend Animal Gospel as worthwhile reading - it is a kind of

hip, " evangelical "

sequel to the original classic, Animal Theology; Animal Blessings looks like it

might be suitable

too.)

how to deal with the death of a dearly loved pet?

Hi everyone:

My cat just died today, and I am feeling very blue over it =(

Does anyone know of any (I hate the term, but don't know what else to

call it) support groups, or rituals, or anything related to how to deal

with the death of a dearly loved pet?

Any information would be very helpful.

Thanks very much,

- Rosalind

Rosalind,

So sorry to hear about your loss. The death of such a close loved one can

be so incredibly difficult to go through.

The SF SPCA has a Pet Loss Support Group that is supposed to be wonderful -

you can learn more about the program here:

http://www.sfspca.org/special_programs/petloss.shtml

I hope this helps.

In Sympathy,

Kasie

Rosalind, I truly regret the loss of your beloved cat. Cats live a long life and are so special to us, as they have their own personalities and ways of relating to humans and other animals. It is a very sad moment to lose such a special being in one's life.

I think you have taken the first steps to recovery in reaching out to others who can share your grief at this difficult time. I would keep reaching out to others who are animal sensitive and can offer words of encouragement. I find it helpful to remember that while an animal's body may be gone, they live on through our memories and emotions. I remember the cat we had growing up. She was her own cat and only turned on her charm when she saw a warm bed or a chicken or turkey snack coming her way! So I believe that your cat is very much with you and will be forever.

The Humane Society and some churches sponsor Pet Bereavement groups if you are interested. The minister at my home church in San Diego is an animal lover and I am sure she would be glad to refer you if you wish. www.pacificchurch.net (Rev Duchess)

Finally, let me acknowledge the love and care you gave to this pet over time. Give yourself time to grieve, to rest, to seek comfort. When you are ready, and only when you are ready, I hope you wil consider adopting another pet in need of a home.

Please let me know if I can be of help to you.

Michael
