Guest guest
here is some info. i recently came upon and thought others might find it useful too. PLU codes for produce: 5 digits starting with 8 indicates the produce was genitically modified. 5 digits starting with 9 indicates it was grown organically. 4 digits indicates it was grown conventionally (neither organic nor GM). Nuke Those Germs: don't throw that sponge away-nuke it for 30 seconds to disinfect it! if it is wet, nuke it for 1 minute. nancy be the change... Guest guest
Nancy's information is true. To add a bit more info, the basic four-digit code for any produce item does not change. So, for example, if apples are 1234, then organic apples would be 51234, and GM apples would be 81234. Hope that helps. Guest guest
I posted this to the SFLiving Foods list last year http://www.sacbee.com/static/live/news/projects/biotech/c5_1.html I think it's a great article. Long but informative. We need to learn from people from foreign country and demand better labeling. Then we can ALL can have a CHOICE. Watch out for corn or soy, it's most likely a GMO product, if not labeled properly. Our government is not doing a good job forcing proper labeling. Organic produce will have a " 9 " in front of the product, like 94131 is an organic Fuji apple. Anything that is GMO SHOULD have a " 8 " in front of the product, like 84131 for a GMO modified Fuji. So, when was the last time you saw a *8 " ?? labeled on a product?
